Hurricane preparation ;
Bake Brownies. You'll need them later for stress management.

Wine. See above reason.

Draw up water in every available container. Put 5 gallon buckets of water with coffee can scoops in bathroom for flushing toilets.

Put away everything outdoors. Outdoor furniture, trash cans, etc. They become flying projectiles in hurricane winds.

First aid kit and make sure to refill prescriptions. After a hurricane hit, it could take weeks to resume services.

Bring pets inside or secure them in a safe place. For my horses, I left barn open, giving them choice of where they felt safest. Barn, forest or open pasture. They spent most of the storm in open pasture, rest in barn.

Bread. If shelves wiped out, bake your own and have sandwich makings.

Candles and kerosene lanterns. Flashlights, extra batteries. A weather radio is nice to have.

Have a text buddy outside of storm area so forum members know you are safe. Phones often won't call out, but text will still work. Have cell phone charged.

Fill gas tanks.

Generators aren't much good. They take gas, in power outages the gas stations won't be able to pump gas.

BBQ pit, charcoal and starter fluid. Cook thawing meat.

Wow Bay you got it down!!They are warning certain areas of flood. A client was looking for a 2nd home in Florida, she would only look at houses that had a police or fire station on the block. She said after a storm they are the first to get power back, sure same for hospitals.

2 different clients just cut their trips short, picking up dogs today. This is where I start loosing money. No one will be traveling or having dog groomed. It can work in my favor, if power goes out for any length of time, people will go to hotels, making them have to board their dogs.

Where I live usually does alright when tropical storms come around, wet, but not completely wrecked. My late father did mention the time that a section of homes immediately north of Manassas were under water, but it was back in the 70's and they are in a floodplain. That storm did come up the bay FWIW. Surrounding jurisdictions, they are usually up a creek despite being the DC suburbs.

Power wise most of the local powerlines are buried and Manassas never lost power for Isabel or for the storm in 2012. I think the city runs its own generators during peak times and buys power from neighboring systems the rest of the time.

Still, I'm getting my groceries tonight and checking for bagged sand or bags of heavy soil at the Home Despot to shore up my back door.
