I think we do! The Scotch kale plants look like palm trees these days.

Well, this one looks something like a palm tree, too!

It is kale. Portuguese kale, "Tronchuda Beira." I'd never eaten nor grown these plants until this year. There are only about 8 or 10 plants & they have been real easy. Obviously, the proper ingredient in Portuguese kale soup!

Both, along with cabbage, are sisters: Brassica oleracea

I tried growing collards; I believe, on 2 occasions. It didn't like it here. Lisbon, Portuguese is on the same latitude as Cincinnati - so, north of Mason-Dixon. Maybe that helps.

Portuguese kale isn't a great deal different from cabbage but . . . different. Scotch kale is kinds tough.

You know, those Portuguese kale plants would have been huge in 2012, if I'd left them alone. I'm glad they weren't left alone and that we continued to harvest leaves right thru its season. The plants didn't grow as big as they could have but I grew to really like Tronchuda Beira.

Somewhere on TEG, I've admitted that I forgot to order seeds for 2013 :/. There was an order for supplies that went in this summer and I didn't want to mess up again in 2014. So . . .

I'm not sure why I'm not getting "alerts."

I'm sorry you have had to wait for a response, @the1honeycomb .

I found the seed for Portuguese kale in the Johnny's catalog (Link).

Ha! For me, Portuguese kale soup is soup made with Portuguese kale! No. There's more to it than that.

Kale and white beans, cooked with smoked sausage and carrots . . . here is a similar recipe, although I'm not sure why the Portuguese sausage is called "andouille." I thought andouille sausage was from New Orleans. But, here it is: (LINK)

Got some of those planted today!

Steve
