Tried to Like It

What vegetable or fruit have you made a Real, Honest effort to like or, at least tolerate, but have failed ... so far!?

Zucchini, or courgettes as @Trish Stretton and @Marie2020 may say, is very low on my list of veggies. I've had them push at me all of my life. DW is fond of summer squash and proud of her zucchini bread. I prefer pumpkin bread and she has learned not to serve zucchini to me, sauteed or whatever ... And, I've been willing to sample summer squash alternatives. Even just alternatives to zucchini in baking (pumpkin bread is 100% better). Still, I haven't disparaged DW's bread making .

I know an avid gardener who won't eat any greens!

Fruit. I'm certainly not much of a kiwi fan. Oops! Just ignore that Trish! Zucchini!

I don’t really like tomatoes especially cooked. I love growing them. And I like the occasional BLT. I actually like them ones most people consider bland more. I don’t like sweet tomatoes or acid tomatoes either one. I have to pick them out of chili and vegetable soup because they make me gag. So they are just kind of a take it or leave it thing. Which is funny considering I’m growing like 13 varieties. I’m also not a fan of limas or arugula.
For fruits it would have to be blackberries. They always seem watery and full of seeds that get stuck in your teeth. Wild ones are better I will eat those. I really like mulberries though!

There really are no fruits or vegies that I dislike. A few are not my favorites, like pears, kale, or zucchini, but I will eat them. Actually I do like zucchini when spiralized and added to spaghetti, and I love it in this recipe:

Zucchini Skillet Dish

Saute:
minced garlic & onions

Add:
shredded or chopped zucchinis
cottage cheese
tamari
tofu (cut into small squares)

Cook covered

Add: shredded mozzarella cheese on top

Recover & cook until cheese melts
----------------------------

Also I like zucchini cut into spears along with carrot sticks and a good dip.

As to pears, I like them best in a fruit salad with apples, oranges, cherries or grapes, and kale goes best in a mix of salad greens in my estimation.

Okra is delicious, either pickled or in a gumbo. However I don't make any of those recipes myself because I can't deal with the slime! Hahaha! Same thing with eel - I will eat it if someone else cleans and cooks it.

I like the texture of vegetables/fruits with lots of edible seeds, like blackberries and okra. This summer's project is to make my own homemade jam with raspberries and blackberries. I have become increasingly aggravated in recent years with otherwise delicious organic jam with the seeds strained out, so it's about time for me to make my own again.

Bitter melon! I saw one at an Asian market and thought, "I need to be more adventurous with my fruits and vegetables. I'm going to try this. What wonderful tastes am I missing because I'm sticking to carrots and potatoes?"

Apparently I'm missing the flavor of nail polish remover in my foods. >.<

Have you tried different varieties? Some are much slimier than others. I can definitely understand not liking it though. I put to much of the wrong kind in a soup last year and it got really slimy it’s been about 8 months and I’m just now able to stomach it again.

Oh no, not kale raw - we will upset @Sweetcorn either way ... (Ya know, I suspect he hasn't tried any variety but Scotch kale.)

Tried but I think @Pulsegleaner may have caught me on Snake melon. I know that I have tried Luffa, other exotics, and things like crooked neck squash.

I do draw some lines with greens - arugula and radicchio are out of bounds. Spinach, I prefer raw although I'm not all that much of a salad eater. Raw spinach/cooked kale Did learn to like some varieties of chard.

@digitS' it’s not that I hate kale, it has no flavor. When wife sneaks it into salads, I eat it knowing it’s just fiber-like cardboard.

Radishes for me. Wife loves them, I do not like them. Will try grilled this year as I’m told it sweetens them up.

That's one way to put it. I personally think they taste like green bell peppers (which I am already not fond of raw) dipped in boiled down concentrated tonic water (so basically quinine)

Ironically, when you let the things get overripe, the red goo in the middle is DELICIOUS ( just be careful not to eat the seeds, they are not only nasty but poisonous)

And while I LOVE cilantro, I find both culantro and Rau Ram (Vietnamese coriander) repulsive, I find the former to coarse to be palatable and the latter tastes rank. Not a big fan of Papalo either.

Actually there are many pretty common things I detest, like melon except for watermelon (winter melon doesn't count, that's a vegetable not a fruit, and it doesn't really taste of anything on it's own.)
