    Critter Vent!

If you have dogs- I take the fur that I brush off of mine and scatter it in the garden. The scent seems to keep them away.

    Something is eating my beans!

I had Mexican bean beetles last year. Look on the undersides of the leaves for orange eggs in groups, then squish them. The beetles didn't affect the actual bean pods so I wasn't too hard on them.

    Rough edges on seedlings

Hey! Just an update- I think my ragged edges may have come from earwigs. I have noticed them around and apparently they feed on seedlings. At any rate the DE cleared up the problem but I did not get a chance to try the beer. That may be best for the dog! Thanks for everyone's help!

    Blooming Holly?

Hello! I was given a holly bush a couple of years ago. I planted it in my front yard and it grew. Maybe it is a little leggy, but it is fine. Then this year I look out in the front yard and there is all this stuff on the branches. I thought it was pollen, but they are light yellow blooms. I...

    Asparagus Recipes

I am so jealous since I just started my asparagus bed this year and can't pick them, but those sound awesome. One of my favorites is asparagus quiche. Truthfully usually I don't even bother with the crust and just make an asparagus frittata. Frittata is my favorite way to use any garden...

Update - I've got sprouts! Sewing Diva's asparagus

I agree with seedcorn. Mine are just now coming up too! Good luck!

    Rough edges on seedlings

So you sink a can of beer in the garden and they slime their way in? I guess this would also prevent Dixie (my dog) from lapping up the beer when she got a chance!

How Big a Garden to Make?

I agree that you should start small. Last year was my first year gardening and I had a small bed. It was manageable and fun to do, so I came back this even more excited to start a garden again. Something else to consider, if you have a small garden and it not more than you can handle, you can...

    Daylillies Taking Over

Hmmm... Maybe that is why my mom was so excited to give them to me. :)

    Slugs...

I suspect slugs are eating my seedling so I sprinkled my DE around. But I would love to know where you find slug when you are hunting them. Around the base, on the leaves?

    Rough edges on seedlings

That what I figured. Maybe they just get up earlier than i do. I'll put out some diatimaceous (sp.) earth, and see if that does it. Thanks!

    Daylillies Taking Over

I think that is what happened. I got them from my mom last year and never suspected how much they would grow in one season! Maybe I will just dig up the Asiatic lilly since it is much smaller. Thanks for the advice! Vfem, I'd say give it a few years and I will definately be able to send...

    Daylillies Taking Over

Hello! Kaycei's question reminded me of a question. Can I divide my daylillies now? They have grown a ton already this spring and are crowding some of my Asiatic lillies. There are no blooms yet, only foliage. I know they are very hardy, so would they be traumatized if I cut them in half...

    What about dogs?

My friends bought a little kiddie pool and keep it filled with a few inches of water to cool off their dogs. Maybe just giving them a better place to cool off than the garden might work.

    Rough edges on seedlings

Hello! I have noticed that my seedling have ragged edges, both in my vegetable and flower gardens. I have not spotted any slugs (although I guess they could be hiding :)) and I thought rabbits and squirrels would eat the plant all the way to the ground. I know this is not a lot to go on...

Best Vine for Chain Link Fence

This is unusual but I bought a hops vine this spring to climb over our garage. It has already started growing and putting out leaves. It is supposed to be a fast grower. It produces little pine cone like hops. They are useful if you are a home brewer too. Hops would probably grow great and...

    Dead asparagus?

Hmm I think I need to replant mine now. I definitely crowded mine but I thought that maybe I make it work. I will dig them up before they start up.

    Another raised bed question

Hello! I am using 8" untreated pine boards for my raised beds. I have dug the clay soil underneath 1 foot deep and turned it over. However some grass/weeds are still showing. I was going to fill the boxes with 4" of topsoil. Will this be enough to suppress the weeds? If not should I add...
