So what do all you green thumbed folks do....

Bake bread and try to give away more than I eat. I also start to work on the inside of the house, moving furninture around and hanging pictures. I have been married for nearly 2 years and I still haven't hung all the pictures in my house!:P I also manage to lose my plans for next year's years...

What Are You Planting Today, This Week, This Month?

When I brush my dog I take the extra fur and sprinkle it in the garden. This repels many animals and maybe cats if they are afraid of dogs. You just have to be sure and rinse the little dog hairs away when you pick your vegetables!

    Suggestions for sowing perennial seeds

I love that wintersown site! I will sow my seeds this weekend since we were planning to mulch. I will have to keep extra watch over them in the spring. I planted some coneflower seeds last spring and weeds took over, but since I didn't know what coneflower looked like I watered them. I...

    Suggestions for sowing perennial seeds

Hello! My flower garden was a disaster this year. So I am determined to succeed next year. I read that you should sow you perennial seeds in the fall for next year, but when do you do this? I am worried that they will sprout since temps are low 80s/ 50s here and we wont get our first frost...

    Worms in a cold frame

Thanks, I had no idea they would be so effective at trapping heat. I can't wait to eat a fresh salad in November! That is if I can build the box. I am an amateur gardener but I am an absolute novice at construction.

    Worms in a cold frame

Hello! My parents are replacing the windows in their old house, beautiful 5 foot tall ones, and I thought this would be a perfect oppurtunity to recycle them into some cold frames. Has anyone ever stored their vermiculture bin in a cold frame over the winter? I would of course try to prevent...

Your Pride and Joy Of The Season

I am proud of my whole vegetable garden this year! It was my first one and it was pretty successful. We did not have to go to the store for vegetables once all summer. This will give me the confidence to work on my flower garden which did not fare as well. Apparently I have been cultivating...

    pumpkin surgery

Hello! I planted pumkins a bit late this year, so to increase the chances that I would have a Halloween pumpkin I picked one plant and have been giving lots of TLC. Well "Bob" the chosen pumpkin has been coming along fine when I noticed the orangish goop from the squash vine borer on the...

Where did all the lightning bugs (fireflies) go this summer?

I've seen a couple around here but nothing like I remember. There should be a lot too since we live near a big field.

    Tips for freezing tomatoes?

I'm sure someone has asked this before but can you freeze tomatoes? I have Romas that I am planning on cutting in half, coring and seeding then placing in a zip top bag to freeze. Should I skin them too? What will the texture be when I defrost them, mushy or firm? Thanks for any help and...

For those of you who make chili rellenos

I think it is traditional to serve them with ranchero sauce which is a combination of spices chicken broth and maybe a little tomato. I personally feel it makes the rellenos soggy and omit it or I add a little salsa on it right before I take a bite. I put salsa on just about everything though...

    White aphids?

Hello! After returning from vacation I noticed my tomato leaves yellowing in spots then turning brown and crispy. I looked on the plant and saw numerous tiny white bugs that looked like aphids. I sprayed with soapy water a couple of times but the problem is continuing ans spreading. I did...

Tomato problem. What is causing this?

Mine did the same thing while I was on vacation. We did not get much rain then we got Hurricane Fay and 4 inches of rain. Have you tried to eat your tomatoes DD ranch? Do they still taste ok if you cut off the wrinkly part?

I thought this was a bell pepper???

You are so lucky! I tried to grow cherry peppers this year but none sprouted. I don't remember these being very hot, but I love hot food so I am a poor judge. I have seen these peppers stuffed with prosciutto and parmesean and marinated in in olive oil. They are awesome!

Difference in Pumpkins Cooking vs Jack O lantern

My pumpkins were just labled "pumpkin" on the seed pack. Is there any other way to tell if you have a cooking pumkin or a carving pumpkin? Do carving pumkins taste less sweet or pumpkin-y? Just curious... Thanks!

    Anaheim Peppers

I got mine from Burpee in a hot pepper seed pack. The pack only produced one anaheim plant though. I don't know if you can buy just a pack of anaheim seeds. Do you stuff them?

    Making tomato sauce

You are never supposed to store tomatoes in cast iron, but I don't think it would raise the acidity of the sauce so much as the taste. I could be totally wrong though. I cook tomatoes in cast iron occasionally with no different results, but I always take whatever I am cooking out right after it...
