    Of Garlic and Lessons Learned...

yes @Zeedman i understand scaling down from larger plots. before i was planting up to 200 large cloves and then a few hundred various sizes for green garlic early harvests. now i'm planting about 30 total and only the one type. i don't want to complicate my life any more than it already is. :)

i still recommend using some of your subsoil as a trial if you can. :) rock dust will be ok but it isn't clay or loam and you do want some water retention capabilities that come with them. mostly sandy soils get dry too fast, hmm, but then again perhaps that is ok where you are at!? :) i...

2024 Little Easy Bean Network - Growing Heirloom Beans Of Today And Tomorrow

finished up another bag of beans, 3lbs of Purple Dove. not as many as i thought but still nice considering it came from a garden outside the fence. ten more bags to go. have to take a break though for getting some garlic ready to plant before i can get back to shelling.

    stubbed toes and mud pies

finished shelling another bag of beans... 3lbs of dry beans. not as many as i thought but still a welcome bonus as it came from a garden outside the fence. only ten more to go, but before i can get back to them i really need to get the garlic bulbs taken apart and some cloves set aside for...

that's great to hear @baymule ! :) we're finally getting a good drenching that we've also needed. when i took out the trash i sorted the paper stuff out of the recycle and only put out the rest of it so it wouldn't matter as much. we only get recycle pick up every other week so we do need...

    Amkuska's 2025 Garden

more mineral based would mean less organic materials. does your area have garden soil deeper than a shovel? dig down a shovel and take the soil from below that depth and perhaps that would have less organic stuff in it. use that to plant some of your starts into of each variety and see how it...

    Amkuska's 2025 Garden

these are my suggestions, i hope they help, you can try this in one garden and see how it goes. in the spring to early summer you don't want mulches on the soil to get it warmed up the plants will not like cool soil. try growing them in more mineral based soils, we grow pretty good peppers...

    stubbed toes and mud pies

it doesn't bloom immediately in the spring, it blooms a bit later for me, about Jun 10-20 or so. Not sure what it will do there in your climate. perhaps it will bloom twice since you may not get hard frosts? i really don't know... :)

2024 Little Easy Bean Network - Growing Heirloom Beans Of Today And Tomorrow

i was able to get back to some bean shelling yesterday and today. yesterday's quarter bag of beans gave me about a 1/2 cup of beans. these came from plants grown in a pretty poor soil garden which gets amended with whatever i can come up with and the soil is more sandy than most of the other...

    A Seed Saver's Garden

getting permission from the owner isn't too likely for me to smother it with what materials i can get right now. there's no access for tractor or hauling stuff in so any mulches have to be brought in a wheelbarrow at a time. i've already tried to get permission for taking it all out again but...

i see that California got some snow in the mountains and rains down lower. also Colorado picked up some snow last week in their mountains, so the winter snow season is starting up in places. i'm glad we've not had any snow yet, but there has been plenty of frosts so far. today was as perfect...

    A Seed Saver's Garden

it takes two to three years to get a decent stand of alfalfa growing. it is not recommended to grow garlic among it in clay and is also not easy to keep free of weeds. after several years of growing it and chopping it back to improve some soil where i wanted to eventually turn it into a...
