I need to sit down and catch up with this thread from beginning to end -- just finished moving for the second time this year! (Got my network beans in big pots and they will probably be the most well-traveled beans of 2020, lol). But I was searching for info on how Russ sets up his bean poles...
The Falcon I grew last year (via Tricia77, who I think got them from Russ originally) was itty-bitty in pretty much every way. Itty-bitty seeds, itty-bitty pods, itty-bitty plant. It got kinda shaded out by the larger bush beans around it, but all of the plants were easily under a foot tall and...
Finally caught up with the end of the thread! *whew*
If there's something I haven't been behind on this year, I don't know what it is.
I grew out six LEBN varieties this year, with mixed results. Which was pretty disappointing after last year's resounding successes, but... I guess that's a good...
Man this season was bad. Especially compared to last year, which for me at least was magical. Last year I only grew 4 plants of any given pole bean, and got 1+ pounds off at least 5 or 6 of them. This year...... gak.
Did you get purple-streaked pods off this? Every time I've grown it (this year and the past two years) the seed has looked exactly the same, with zero off-types, but I've gotten pods that turn purple-streaked right toward the end. But the original grower said she never got those purple-streaked...
I've never actually grown them, but I have a pack of 2018 seed from Baker Creek and would be happy to send you some. Might be fun to run a test crop next to whatever you harvest from this year! :)
Galloway and Frost both grew as semi-runners for me this year; I did start them late, but honestly I think it was just a crap year for beans in this neck of the woods.
I have Benishibori that I'm growing out this year; I'll send you some! At least it's *a* Benishibori; but it's such an unusual name I can't imagine there's more than one. It's a red and white speckled-y bush bean.
I presprouted all my bean seeds last year, and I'm planning to do it again this year. It was kind of an experiment, but I feel like the pros outweighed the cons by the end of the season.
I used those 2-lb salad mix tubs, with 2 wet dishtowels (one below the beans and one above), and kept the...
Thanks for posting the bush beans! I think I'm finally decided...
Network Beans:
Galloway; Frost; Schoko Flecken; Lila Stuart; Ojibwe Black; and Night Star if you have it (it looked like it was on the website as 2013 seed, but let me know if I should pick something else).
Extras: Buxton...
Hooray, happy 2019!!! :weee
Do you have a list of beans that need to be grown out the most, or is the website a pretty accurate snapshot of that right now?
That was my experience with the Rwanda Rainbow and the Mugungi both.
Mugungi was interesting because it put on a huge flush of blossoms in the spring, then totally shut down for the summer (the plant itself was beautiful, but almost no blossoms), then toward the fall it put on another huge...
This unfortunately is one thing I didn't keep track of this year; next year I will, though. The little pink beans had some GORGEOUS dark-rose-colored pods, though.
