No tornados here. We actually had it fairly easy. As I watched the radar maps, on WeatherBug, on my phone, it seemed like the worst of the storm cells were going on either side, of us, as they headed Northeast. We didn't even seem to have much for wind.
We ended up getting (what looks like...
Probably not. But, if it comes to that, we have a 3 gallon Berkey gravity water filter.
I have been assured, by several different sources, that water coming off the roof does not pick up chemicals, from the shingles. Although it likely picks up dust & dirt from the air. Animals & gardens get...
Thanks, Bay!
We plan to put hose size connectors on the spirits, so we can water the garden & animals, with the water, rather than pay the co-op for water. So, we should use up the water while it is still fresh. I most likely wouldn't treat the water, because we want to stay chemical free.
Good point, @seedcorn. Muscle does weigh more than fat. One of the things that we all inherited, from my father, is big muscles. I've always been told I don't look like I weigh as much as I do. Maybe that is why.
Yes, I have a layer of fat. But, I also have bigger leg & arm muscles. My bicepts...
Someone on my journal (Devonviolet Acres) suggested algae growth would be a problem with the white semi-opaque plastic allowing light through, and he is right. He suggested hanging black plastic around the totes or painting the totes black or adding some copper sulfate to the water.
Here is my...
DH & I were just talking about that this morning.
We have seen how algae grows in the white totes, and were planning to put some kind of cover on the totes, to minimize algae growth. Copper sulfate is not a good option, because we are also planning to use this water, for the animals &...

AMEN Sistah! Well said, Bee!
Something I didn't mention, is that my DH is 6'2" & weighs 170. His ribs and bones stick out all over. I can't help but feel like Jack Sprat, who could eat no fat & his wife, who could eat no lean. Only thing is we eat the same food, but I eat smaller portions than...
The short answer is no. If you look at the photos, that shows how one man daisy chains multiple totes together, you will see that he used the spigot, that came with the totes, to hook the three together at the bottom. And if you look closely, you can see a black elbow pipe going into the top of...
When you have 2 or more totes together, it's helpful to daisy chain them together. A man, that was selling totes, sent me the following photos, of the way he daisy chains his together:
It's not always about eating cheeseburgers, chocolate cake & French fries. So, I'd like to give my perspective on the issue.
I eat the way weight loss experts advise overweight people to eat. I am active, on the farm & strong as an ox - can lift a 50 pound bag of feed & toss around large square...
We had an exhausting, busy day yesterday!
Today we are having rain all day. Since we got the water totes last week, we wanted to get them set up to start our rainwater collection.
Before we could do that we had to drive to town (Sulphur Springs) to get some supplies, at Lowe's, to hook our...
I lived in PA for 9 years, moved to MN, for 11 years & moved back to PA. When I applied for a driver's license, they pulled up my old PA DL number & gave it to me again.
In my previous marriage, I lived in TX for 6 years. When my current husband & I moved to TX, I figured they would just give...
A consideration, when deciding how large the water containment vessel should be is how much water comes off the roof.
Here is one site that give a simple formula, for figuring how much water comes off your roof:

You have a good point there. The number of fish would determine how hast the water gets dirty & oxygen depleted. Two fish would definitely take a LONG time to dirty 55 gallons of waters
 I can see myself doing that. I bet you didn't do that more than once!
Putting goldfish in your barrels sounds like it might be a good way to keep mosquitos down. Just make sure you empty the barrels & replace the dirty water with fresh, to keep from killing your fish.
Another way to...
So true! YIKES! 12" of rain a year! :ep
I used to live in Lake Worth, TX, where the annual rainfall was around 25". I considered that desert conditions. :th
I also lived in Fresno, CA, as a child. Mostly I remember HOT & DRY! Ugh! Didn't like that.
I'm not sure I could survive on 12"...
