I'm waiting on the last of Crystal Wax to dry down but other than that my network beans are about done. I prefer to save seed from nice clean pods which wasn't a problem for the rest but Crystal Wax did not do especially good in my garden. I do have some later pods that look nicer so I'll wait...
I wonder how many generations it takes till a new bean is completely stabilized as a new variety. I have bunches of crossed up beans in my collection but never really applied the time and effort necessary to answer that question.
I have a mix of types from an Ideal Market x KY Wonder cross and...
I got way plenty of Burgandy Bolita seeds to save for next year and send back. Not quite enough Crystal Wax as the majority of them are BLACK! I'm calling them, for lack of a better idea Crystal Black. Most of the vines are making the white seeds but the white seeded ones are far less...
My Refugee beans and both of my network grow out beans will be drying down for seed soon, although Refugee especially seems to be continuing to bloom and set new pods. The others are too but to a much less degree. Had some problems on earlier with spots on the pods from bugs although I never did...
I'v been growing beans for time measured in decades rather than years but it never occurred to me that I could grow just a few of several kinds to make it more fun. You really only need a few, specially of pole beans to see how you like em and how they do.
I always thought you had to grow a...
@Bluejay77 , beautiful soil and fences in your gardens. Lots of good sun exposure too, I'm jealous. Do you have to put chicken wire or something at the bottom to guard against rabbits or are they not a problem in your area? When I lived in town I grew beans and stuff just where ever I felt like...
@Pulsegleaner ,are you talking about bush beans? I don't think they will stop growing or break but pods on the ground is one of the reasons I grow mostly pole beans.
Even if the stems of bush are nice and strong and the pods are held up nice and high it still seems like a storm always comes...
I'm happy to report that Refugee is a very tasty green bean!! My quest for beans that I neither have to stoop over to pick or build a giant trellis for is in sight. They remind me flavor wise very much of some of my old favorites, greasy beans. Haven't tried Crystal Wax or Burgundy Bolitas as...
All three of my network beans are producing well. I'm leaving the first of Crystal Wax and Burgundy Boiltas to go to seed and looks like will still have plenty to try them out for flavor and save some for me too. Don't know that either one is known for use as green beans but gonna try it...
Wow, @Bluejay77 that is a lot of beans. I only have about a dozen kinds planted this year. I wish I had more space as I have several crosses I wold like to grow out, including a couple P. coccineus x P. vulgaris with interesting bluish colored seeds.
My only crossed grow out I'm doing this...
Looks like Crystal Wax is the first to set pods this year even though they were planted a couple days after my bush beans.
They also, like I mentioned before, have some variation in phenyotype to the leaves. Two plants of about a dozen look like the one to the right, the rest look like the...
I have three 50 ft rows of bush beans, Roma II, Contender and Bush KY Wonder but the supposed to be bush KY Wonder have turned out to have some runners. I'm hoping they don't go past 4 ft as that is all the trellis I had available. Also hoping it wasn't a mix up and that they are really regular...
Hi, I'm new to posting here. I had trouble getting on as apparently I had made an account sometime back and forgot about it. Anyway I think I figured it out and wanted to report on some beans I got from Russ earlier this spring. I was looking for beans that grew as a short vine and came across...
