Thank you! We're really lucky to have such a cool space. I live just north of downtown Indianapolis and undeveloped land is pretty rare - as a huge bonus, it has water. Our group has been there for 9 years. Due to pending development, this may be our last season but it's been a a great...
Our neighborhood garden always looks best in June. Before that some of the plots are still a mess and after that many get a bit overgrown. In any case, it's a fun endeavor.
Our weather (Indianapolis) has been bouncing around as well. I had what I thought was a good planting week and as soon as I got the beans in the ground it turned cold and rainy. Fortunately I got good germination overall, it just seemed to take everything about a week longer to pop out of the...
That is one cool looking little hoe. Just looked these guys up and they make some really interesting tools. Definitely going on the wish list! Thanks for sharing!
I was using a tool belt once and had my pruners pointy side up like a dope, I bent over to pluck a weed and almost impaled myself. So, tool belts aren't for people with my lack of short term memory and inability to face tools in the right direction.
The aforementioned Mini Japanese Garden Hoe. The handle is about 15" which gives you a lot more leverage than your typical hand tool. I just love the size and have used it for years. Most of my gardening efforts are in either raised beds or small spaces so these style tools are perfect for me.
I was gardening this morning and I've got a new favorite garden tool. Tool purists may claim it's not a tool, but meh. I got a new garden bag this past Christmas - it's the red one from Lee Valley that I suppose many have seen in the catalog if you receive them.
This garden bag is simply...
It's been monsoon season in Indianapolis the last couple of weeks (started a few days after I planted my beans). I was really concerned that all the seeds were going to rot in the ground because the weather didn't cooperate at all. I'm happy to report though that the beans were resilient and...
Was looking through this forum and have a terminology question which I've been unable to answer with a light Google dive. I'm fairly inexperienced with seed collecting and am not familiar with the terms segregation and outcross. Outcross I can kind of imagine but the Segregation stumps me...
@Bluejay77 I received my 2019 beans, thank you! Would you happen to know the country of origin of these? I'm particularly curious about Nwambili, Trebulino di Domenico and Fisole Rassacher Kipfler. These three are listed as being donated by Joseph Simcox "The Botanical Explorer" - I googled...
@Bluejay77 I sent you an email with the network beans I'm hoping to grow in 2019. If you don't get it, please let me know. I'm really looking forward to participating again next year.
Thanks again for your efforts with this project!
It's always been a rotating group of gardeners; we started the project in 2011 and there were 4 of us that were there the whole run. It's been a great project but it's not really feasible that the 'gardeners' will stay together. We don't have a back up at present as there really aren't any...
This morning I cleaned up my plots at our neighborhood garden. This spring I posted that this was likely going to be our last year in the space due to the property being developed. We're still waiting to hear from the owners to see when they're planning on building, so I suppose it's a...
@Bluejay77 Got the beans in the mail today. Hopefully you'll have them by Tuesday or Wednesday. Thanks again for managing this whole operation; you're doing valuable work! I just gave your web info to a teacher who runs the community garden at my kid's school suggesting he get his class to...
@Bluejay77 I'm hoping to get my beans in the mail this week, they're dry and ready to package up. I tried six network beans this year, unfortunately Joyce Fetterly's Red & White fell victim to a rabbit incursion and was a complete loss. As for the other five, I was able to hit my targets. My...
