Lots of weeding here too. Have a few more discount perennials to put in the ground today, and a houseplant in a broken pot to take care of. Maaaybe bee hive inspection, if the breeze dies down a little...it's just a little too windy to smoke the hive well at the moment.
I have a couple of new potatoes where I dug a potato plant to see if they were ready. Going to cook them up for lunch later, and top with an egg and maybe a few slices of fried green tomatoes if I can find a tomato big enough to make the mess worth my time. I also have some green onions, hot...
I pulled a few more weeds this morning, this evening I am going to plant the couple of dahlia bulbs I found on clearance last week at the store for $1.49 each. I probably won't get to see them bloom before frost, but they can at least grow and get bigger for next year!
We got about an inch and a quarter of rain last night, that we very much needed. The high for the next two days is about 80 degrees, upper 50s at night. If all of summer could be this way it would be perfect, lol.
@flowerbug these beds were made late, so i went with the paper on purpose. wanted just enough of a barrier to tamp down the grass, but not enough to keep the plants i want from reaching the soil. This fall they will get the heavier weed barrier
I pulled some more weeds, thankfully it rained enough I'm not going to have to water for a few days. I am slooowly collecting enough cardboard to fully smother some of these weeds this fall. The paper I put down isn't strong enough to get anything but the grass...still pulling bindweed and...
Went out last night and pruned my tiny tree experiment. Ended up taking more than I had originally planned on, but it is all opened up for air and light to get through to the center, and appropriately champagne-flute shaped. This is the third year on it, hopefully next year I will have peaches!
I went out and weeded again this morning, my mother went out and watered last night. Took the dog to the vet, got called in to work in a different store than mine in a few hours, have fresh sugar syrup cooling to put out for the bees in the morning. They're not taking it fast, but they're...
The wind sure has been something else the last few days....I was hoping it would bring more rain with it! I have an old gnarly tree that needs to come down, but it is too far back from the road for the county to care, lol
If they leave enough of a stump, you can hollow it out and make yard art...
Had an omelet yesterday with bits and pieces of random veg from the fridge....and garlic scapes from my garden. Also made a jug of sun tea with several handfuls of apple mint leaves for a different flavor.
This morning I went out and weeded everything, replanted some pumpkin seeds, and discovered that I definitely DO have bees again! The new girls are much darker than the Italians I had originally, and hopefully, since they came off a wild hive or one of my more distant neighbor's hives, better...
Went out early this morning and pulled weeds, watered a few plugs that needed it, and turned my compost piles. After I have a late breakfast I am going to suit up and go out to open up my bee hive. There's been activity on it for almost three weeks now, and I didn't want to disturb a swarm...
My thermometer says it is 100, with heat index of 104, and has for the last several days. I'm sure it's nowhere near as hot for the official local temperature, but. Sometimes we get a day or two of heat in late may or early June, but we typically don't see triple digits until late july, early...
I finished up the last of the new garden beds that we made yesterday, the extra load of mulch came so it is finished and ready to go. I planted starts of zinnia, hollyhocks, strawberry spinach, cilantro, parsley, chives, savory, two different kinds of basil, six different kinds of peppers, some...
I am finally done moving the piles of compost and mulch after about four hours yesterday and three hours today. All of the beds in the front yard have been weeded, had fresh compost added, and a thick layer of mulch. The fruit trees got a new layer of burlap, compost, and mulch to the current...
I got about half of my piles of compost and mulch laid down before the heat sent me indoors. The flowerbeds got a thin layer of compost sifted off my shovel, and a heavy layer of mulch. The vegetable beds got about a two inch layer of compost beneath an equal amount of mulch. I have enough of...
