Duck's New Ragtag garden, Version 2020

Good luck with the garlic....If you can't get more bulbs to grow this year, I have a patch that is naturalizing and can send you some bulbs. I don't remember the variety, but it keeps well and is tasty.

    Self-seeding annuals

We let the poppies self seed every year, and I have dill and cilantro that volunteer too, although the batches are almost gone now because I haven't been letting enough of it go to seed.

What Did You Do In The Garden?

I pulled some more bindweed, and ran from the carpenter bees. I try not to mess with pollinators, but these things are aggressive even if they can't sting. The pyrenees runs from them...I have a couple of traps coming to hopefully get the population under control in his area....they bounce off...

    The Lazy Gardener, 2020 edition

Still dealing with grocery store craziness, but I think I have roughly two months to go. My elbow still hurts, I am going to call the doctor tomorrow. It's been a month, I am still having issues gripping things, and it's my dominant hand. I'm not willing to mess around with that too much...

What Did You Do In The Garden?

Still too busy at work to do much more than glance at the garden, but I did get some of the flowers I bought mudded into the flowerbed!

    Bees in weird places...

@ducks4you the faucet is one of the kind you just find on the side of the house to attach a hose to. it's on the west side of my house, gets shaded until about 1 pm and full sun the rest of the day @Carol Dee I loved having bees...the old timers who taught the beekeeping class I took a few...

    Bees in weird places...

I have a script for a pen, but they are stupid expensive even with insurance, and after the first ER visit there weren't any in town to buy. It was very close to the end of the season, so I took a risk and didn't fill it immediately. The main reason I was getting stung that second year was...

What Did You Do In The Garden?

I pulled some bindweed and moved a few more plants in pots around in the flowerbed, and have decided where the new apple trees will go. Also there are bees going in and out of my empty hive....here's hoping that it's a swarm settling and not just some local hive robbing whatever traces of honey...

    Bees in weird places...

@Ridgerunner I was assuming they were climbing up to the closed valve for a drink, but on that faucet the valve isn't that far up the line...there was no room for three bees! One of the guys at work suggested that maybe they had gotten in through the vent line and sucked through when I turned...

    Bees in weird places...

Yes I do know somebody who has needed a hospital to get over a bee sting! Me! I used to be a beekeeper, until the allergy popped up. The entire first year, I was getting stung once or twice every time I worked my hives...usually while I was closing them and someone would get caught in my...

    Bees in weird places...

I only see the occasional honeybee on my property (usually checking out my empty hives), but I have a thriving population of carpenter and bumblebees. Turned on one of the outdoor water faucets earlier this week, and after the water had run a solid minute, it spat out three huge carpenter bees...

What Did You Do In The Garden?

@Dirtmechanic beautiful roses! Usually ours are budding up to bloom about now, but it's been so cold they haven't started yet. @ducks4you no tomato loss...they're not really thriving yet though. They need more heat than what we are getting! I did lose most of my tiny pepper plants to a...

What Did You Do In The Garden?

@digitS' last year I got control over the bindweed in the vegetable beds by cutting my planting density in half and mulching with black plastic...there's still bindweed there, but significantly less than last year. This year I'm going to try to crowd them out. Closely planted veg with lots of...

What Did You Do In The Garden?

I keep pulling bindweed..every time I walk the dog we stop between the new flowerbed and the veg garden so i can pull every bit I can find. I heaped straw over my tomatoes a few days ago because we had a freeze warning, need to double check for damage today now that it's been 24 hours. Also...

    What do You Freeze?

When I was younger and our cellar still water tight, we would occasionally short-term store potatoes in there in the winter. We only grow pumpkins for the blossoms here and never really have squash to store for winter; I can remember stuffing onions into pantyhose and hanging them in the barn...
