Yes, it remains quite a puzzle to my mind. As you say, the plants have had plenty of heat which I imagine is why it is so ultra vigorous, and the day length is longer but not so much longer than in northern Spain. Ah well, I guess we’ll just have to accept defeat! ☹️
Thanks for this @heirloomgal. Artorius wrote last year that he received seed from Catalonia which is in the north of Spain but I’m not sure whether he meant that they originate there. If so, it would be surprising. Others in previous years have indicated that the plants didn’t thrive. For me, in...
I’m wondering whether anyone else has experience of growing Mongeta del Ganxet, the bean whose seed looks rather like a cashew nut.
I’m attempting to grow it in my polytunnel where it’s notable for two things. Firstly it’s amazingly vigorous and seems to be wanting to take over the whole...
Some are very difficult to pod though until they are fully dry, by which time they are harvestable for seed. Trial and error will suggest which varieties are good for shellies and they’re usually ones with visibly plump beans showing when the pods are just beginning to lose their full greenness...
I’m sorry you’ve had a bad year again, Triffid. In my corner of England it’s been slightly challenging but in general not too bad. Slugs, following the wet spring, devastated my squash but did much less damage to beans.
I failed on three network varieties last year, Tennessee Shortcut, Kermit’s...
I’m growing Bobis d’Albenga this season too and it’s definitely been a bush bean here.
For me it was early but has kept producing and doesn’t seem to want to dry down yet.
Interesting that you write that because I did exactly the same - ate my last Iceberg lettuce yesterday. It’s always a battle to keep lettuce for longer as they bolt so quickly as temperatures rise.
I keep thinking that if I were to get the timing right I could have lettuces right through, but...
Welcome to the forum, frijolymoly.
You’ve chosen some quite old seeds there which might be something of a challenge to germinate. I hope they come to life for you.
It’s also very late in the season. I imagine your climate is favourable for good rapid growth, but are you hoping to get seed in...
I did buy a small second- hand freezer for seeds, mainly beans. It lives outside in a barn.
I keep smaller and smaller amounts of each variety as time goes by. I keep a smallish number of seeds from each harvest for the year, usually 60+ varieties, in small ziploc bags, and put them...
Emperor of Russia is one of the very first beans I grew. Thanks for the extra information, Russ.
It is held in UK by the Heritage Seed Library who offer it to members fairly regularly.
Adam Alexander, known as the Seed Detective, rates it as his very favourite variety...
I’ve had two or three isolated plants wilt and die too for no apparent reason. Flowerbug’s description of ‘vascular collapse’ feels just right.
It’s certainly been unusually hot for a few days here, but then again, not compared with many places. Beans are mysterious creatures sometimes.
Interesting. You might know that producing a pea with a red pod has been quite a holy grail in some quarters. Producing a red podding pea has proved particularly elusive.
For example:

And...
I’ve been noticing flowers more recently too. I think this is the most common colouring in bean flowers, unless it’s just by coincidence in the varieties I’m growing this season.
I think the buds are yellowish, then they open to white, and then finally wither back to yellowish again. You have...
I can vouch for the fact that Barry Island is a very good snap bean. I particularly like flat, Romano-type beans as green beans. I hope you enjoy them.
It looks very like Elephant garlic which is an entirely different species actually related to leek. It’s Allium ampeloprasum rather than Allium sativum, bigger than garlic but tasting similar except milder. It often produces those size cloves/bulbils.
Where it might have come from if you’ve...
Dakota Bumble looks just about ready to eat.
I grew Beurre de Rocquencourt and Tendergreen in my polytunnel, purely to get harvestable beans as easy as possible. We had our first feed yesterday.
A rather belated list from me. I've enjoyed reading everyone else's.
