I really appreciate the responses so far, and look forward to possibly getting some cotton seeds! We really love our hummingbird visitors every year, so I would enjoy being able to put cotton out for them each year to use for nesting material.
I would really like to swap with someone for a few heirloom cotton seeds- we want to grow some for our hummingbirds this year.
I have a handful of Bloody Butcher corn seed or Birdhouse Gourd seeds, both heirlooms to trade!
I am so thankful that Nyboy sent us some NY Tomato seeds last year in trade for gourd seeds. Though we only had one plant successfully make it, just wanted to show gratitude for the gardener's spirit. Thanks for being such an important member of this community. I'll continue to pray for his...
I'm so sorry to hear this- Nyboy was a familiar face in my time here, and such a great joy in this community. So many prayers for his family and his friends.
We recently had to cut down a large tree, however there were no leaves to help better identify it. But, there were some small red buds on it and I also have a picture of the stump. Could anyone please help me identify whether this is an Oak as we are thinking possibly, or something else we can...
@Nyboy - Unfortunately, while the stove does give off great heat for short sitting spells and cooking, it doesn't stay heated long. I was every hour re-filling on wood. Not a long-term burner. Heard some people put coal in them too, but we only kept Oak hunks (nearly half the size of normal...
@Beekissed - Let me dig up an old photo. Poor thing made it through losing our house since it was on the porch- it burns fine but needs some new paint.
The one attached is when it was on the porch (not being burned then)- it's behind out little Heeler if you can see it. It's a Dandy, made by...
So lately we have had a HORRIBLE problem with yellow-jackets around our house. I've been popped on the leg and arm in the past week with irritating results (mild allergy I believe- alot of throbbing pain/numbness in the area for the first few hours then itchiness/heat/swelling a few days after...
@Nyboy - I think that's what they are going to do, as it was a small house in town, but she had a lot of beautiful flowers and trees we are trying to transplant or get snippings from.
Goodness those gourds are giving you a run for sure. How are they looking now? We had some more pop up this year unexpectedly from last year, and they just started to bloom. You're going to have a bunch of birdhouses out there!
My husband's great grandmother recently passed, and as we have cared for her property I've noticed a mystery Apple tree with fruit on it that appears like a ripe pear. The tree has supposedly been here since she lived here, and she once dried and canned them. However, no one has any clue as to...
@Ridgerunner - I was aware they were male/female, but thanks for the helpful reminder just in case! We have about 18 seeds started now, so maybe there are females in there! We found this about determining the sex of them later on:

I've gotten into collecting wild "common persimmons" as of last year. There are a few huge, older trees out in the woods, and many other younger trees that are not putting on fruit yet. I have them timed to be putting on rip fruit right as the garden dies off. Our wildlife absolutely love them...
