    Canning Question

My canner has 'stacking' shelves we use. And yes, we do stack them that way. The shelves slide into the canner (first round of jars on the bottom, put round shelf with holes on top, then next round of jars), mine came with 2. To remove take out top row of jars when done and then hook one of the...

    Pickles, onions and finally...CORN

Given everything you've been through that is excellent! I've been happy with 3 Dozen ears this year. My whole garden just looks sad and dead. I'm surprised anything came out of it edible at all some days. We're growing the Blonde pickling cukes this year, my first planting didn't produce a...

    Ripe Pears

I'm happy to hear you have pears... ours got fire blight and we had to pull and burn them. :( I can say that when we actually HAD some from the tree we picked the few we got at the end of this month. My neighbor's at least have their tree still, and we take the fruit as they have no use for it.

    Show Us Your Tomato!

Thanks Thistle, I'm really not so bad... I'm usually just sick or so busy my days all squish together and I feel like I'm missing out on the happy things in life as the days go by. I'm trying to 'slow down and smell the roses' for the rest of the summer. That's my mission! I wish I could...

    Show Us Your Tomato!

I found a tomato plant under one of my hibiscus plants. It was a small Esther's Best Yellow Cherry tomato plant (which I find EVERYWHERE in this yard every year). They are always so sweet and juicy. The one's I planted on purpose died from all the rain and are long gone, so I was so pleased to...

    Favorite green bean

We fell in love with the dragon tongue beans we got from baker's creek this year. They were huge, and tender. We stir-fried a bunch and they were super crunchy just the way we like. They just kept on producing. In fact we're about to do a last minute second planting while the rest are being left...

What Did You Do In Your Garden Today?

Went out and found one cuke. :( Tons and tons of green roma tomatoes, those all survived the flooding rains thank goodness. We got a ton of green peppers, can't wait for those to ripen soon. I bought the rainbow mix, so I have no idea what colors will riped. I hope they're not all green! :(...

    New pullets, finally!

Sounds like a good deal to me! It's about $15-$20 for a confirmed pullet just short of laying age around here. :) I want to see pictures too. I like the wyandottes. :D

    Melon Problems

Some of the melons have fallen off and shriveled up off of the cantaloupe vines. Maybe that one is indeed an issue with pollnation. I'm surprised they just hung there green for so long. The honeydew style melons haven't grown either. The largest one, larger then a baseball, at full...

    Preserving Chili Peppers

I broil mine, or I just dehydrate them. When I dehydrate I save flakes in tins for recipes, or I grind them into a powder. Just some options! :D

    Next years compost

Nice... my lazy butt hasn't turned mine in a long long time. I just keep piling it up with anything and everything. I bet its soaking wet all the way through. With how wet and cool its been I haven't checked to see if its warm are not. I need to poke it in the morning and see if it steams :)...

    Home Made Vanilla

I make this all the time! We sure do go through a lot of vanilla here. I even sell 4oz bottles for $8 each with the bean in it. I'm telling you, I save soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much money making our own with how much we bake here. I always have a Quart size jar. When I finish it with the...

    Garlic growers

Sadly I rotted out quite a few of mine from the high moisture in the rain while I was trying to cure, or I would happily share with you! I just lost too many after mine had done so well. I was buying my garlic from GrowOrganic.com I really love their selection and I only buy what I need when I...

    Credit Card Yowch!

Well, the danged credit card costs a business a transaction fee of $0.25-$0.35 cents per transaction plus 2.5%-5% of the total transaction! So I understand they don't want to give a discount on a large transactions like gas. I accept credit cards for my business, and at the end of the year a...

    Melon Problems

Yes, generic title for a generic problem. I planted a TON of melons this year. I have 6 vines of watermelon going, all with baseball size melons that have been this size for a good month now. (Some of the melons are feeling soft and I can squeeze them and they have give.) I also have honeydew...
