@Triffid
That’s a bean a friend gave me several years ago. She lives in Lebanon Tennessee. It was found growing in her garden around 12 years ago. That’s about the only history I have on it. I call it Hoteko.
I have another bean that’s similar that I got off eBay a couple years back. The guy...
@Bluejay77
Russ,
I was piddling around today trying to find information on your Marico bean that you grew out in 2019 from where your Draper’s Glen came from. That is if I understood you correctly.
After some more searching, I found your Marico grow out in the 2019 thread. And Also another...
I have two Tennessee Cutshort plants growing in flower pots. I’m hoping the grasshoppers don’t eat them all up. They have sure been munching on them. I’ve seen a few blooms, but no pods yet. Still lots of time, don’t usually get a frost till Turkey Day and sometimes much later.
@heirloomgal
Yea!!!! Here’s wishing you a successful bean crop. We’ve had over 9” of rain in the last couple of weeks. Water is standing everywhere. Had to put on rubber boots to gather squash which is producing like crazy! It’s going to be a mess when I’m finally able to clean up the area of...
@flowerbug touched on something @heirloomgal. The example I’m going to give is Lima Beans.
The “Shelly Stage” Lima is a light green bean and to my palate is a horrible tasting bitter bean. That being said, lots of people love them. When that bean makes it to the dried stage, I call it a butter...
While diddle dallying around, I came across a couple new to me beans. Search these and tell me whatcha think.
Blue Shackamaxon pole bean
Worchester Indian Red Lima
Monachelle Di Trevio
I do the same. I like to plant my tomatoes in a “patch.” Meaning I don’t plant them in a row. I give them 3 feet of room in every direction. I enjoy walking through my mater patch “shaking” them every evening. That is to say when I can weather providing.
I guess everyone has their own favorite way of eating beans. I prefer my snaps to be fat with beans inside. Not like those skinny round things like you buy in cans at the store.
a big pot of snaps with some fatback or a ham hock and a pan of cornbread. The pot liquor is to die for!
Well now....I don’t think you’ve lived a full life lessen you’ve sat in front of the TV with a dishpan full of snaps to string. Hahahaaa. Which by the way is completely different from .....
A few years back I took a big pan full and strung them with needle & thread to make leather britches. I...
@Zeedman
I really haven’t noticed but 1 cross over the years growing Cowpeas. I am overrun with bees too. So much so they are a nuisance at times. Of course I take pains to ensure I have at least 50’ between varieties.
Thought it worth mentioning in case someone grows a tender heirloom. According to Bill Best who is an authority on beans, he says conventional beans have been bred with a “tough” gene for ease of picking And to keep those as far away from your heirlooms as possible.
just food for thought.
