I would try that and see if it helps. Wet the cardboard till it's water logged and everyday check it and keep it moist. It does take a long time for them to germinate so you have to have patience.
Unless you have delicate, soft soil, I would grow in raised bed or a container.

When you say "lousy at growing." What do you mean? What do you have trouble with? I'm no expert, but I can tell you what I do.
I sow mine very shallow and I cover with wet cardboard & keep it wet until they germinate. Just keep a check and when they sprout, remove the cardboard.

I just grow them. I don't care for raw tomatoes except a few varieties of cherries. Love spaghetti sauce though.
Joe's Pink OxHeart is pretty hard to beat in my opinion for a good heart. They are currently out of seeds at the moment though.
