I've seen it demonstrated, dunno why haven't had a go myself. Maybe this year is when i convert ... copper and slugs I have used, but not as antennae. that could be very helpful indeed
Aha that is so exciting delivery and anticipation of treats to come! I have today at last got my head around my selection from Guy Dirix. And I'm waiting for orders to arrive from a couple of mainland seed houses too, my British ones arrived within a couple of days (really quickly). I truly have...
thanks for the detail.
I have tended to plant tall beans on tripods or most usually A-shaped double lines. I interplant with lettuce, & other saladings sometimes leeks, sometimes brassicas that can take over later, and make use of the nitrogen. In my present garden plot ( the bigger area) it...
I tend to leave stubby bits where I trim my bean poles (sometimes quite long) .
And I also learnt the hard way on reusing hazel poles for heavy vigorous beans.
I do reuse them in various set ups, usually as horizontals where they are not going to be the only load bearing structural element.
this bothers me too Eleanor -
How close are the spacings I can get away with?
Which plants are most likely to cross?
and can I train bumbles etc to make the crosses I dream of?
btw the nearest we get to bears are maurauding teenagers &/or ... well that's it really
this is so fascinating ( botanist brain tempted to read papers of these phytochemicals and co-evolution of this bean fly ).
loving the observation about fresh vs older seeds. v interesting.
The pictures of your set-up are lovely. Practically, I wonder how the birch stands up, as I 'know' them to be brittle in my experience. More, the stands of white stems reminds me somewhat of (northern territories?) Australian traditional funary/ancestor practices in Arnhemland, (I think)...
BlueJay & Heirloomgal,
I've had a response form T&M seeds and no more info!

Dear Michele,
Thank you for your email.
I am sorry to advise that we do not have the information you requested. Please accept my apologies for any inconvenience this may cause, if I can be of any further...
Re T&M - they are pretty rubbish at replying to questions even if you can get through to them. (Nearly a thousand years ago, I applied for exactly that customer queries help desk job when not long out of college. I think I blinded them with science and never even got called to interview - I've...
One of the things I am enjoying , as I make my way through this thread, is just how familiar the sights are ^ ^ Your drying room with no seat, no floor space and multiple seed flats and receptacles teetering on top of one another, crammed into almost every space. Plant hulms in my living room...
in addition , there are several regional/ localised versions of di Fuouco, both bush and climbing available (Seeds of Italy = Franchi seeds for reference)
Reading these threads, I am changing how I store ALL my beans. I have gotten away with healthy beans for many years, but have sometimes lost peas stores to weevils. I now know how to do better - thank you
I find it hard to know sometimes whether it is a poor doer, inherent to bean or if its an off season or patch in the ground which has meant poor pod production or seed set.
In terms of trying to 'decide' criteria on which to try to maintain a particular sort, then quality and quantity of...
