Thats what I thought I remembered. I did a lot of reading this winter and if it had been actual rot, then I would have to be concerned. I remember reading about hollow hearts, but couldn’t remember the particulars.
So, my garden surprised me by not being frozen yesterday and that means its time for seed potatoes.
I have red, white, and purple being prepared to go in the ground this weekend. I may try for a second planting in about 2 weeks. I also have some russets on order.
When I was cutting my...
I admit to planting some spinach and kale about a week ago. I may do a bit of lettuce if I can this weekend. It is snowing (again) now, but it will be up to 55 degrees this weekend. Makes me wonder if it is only teasing me, though. I will probably try for some broccoli too. 😒
Does anyone know how much coffee grounds are too much for a compost pile? I add it to my compost tank daily, and while there is not much, but it started me thinking.
My home is surrounded by rabbits. I wonder how silly it would be to go around collecting it. It also has a bunch of wild horses that keep visiting. They did so in the fall, so my garden is now well supplied, but they just visited again, so I guess that manure will go in my compost bin.
How much...
More sprouted onions! the other set died, but that might have been because I planted them in pots right before the temperatures went down to -20. We are set to have a period of warm weather, and I will try getting these into my raised beds. Their cousins seem to be still alive, so they may have...
Mice and rats can chew through anything, even plastic. Our shop vacuum has a hole in the top now. I guess a mouse was looking for a house this winter and that wasn't thin plastic.
I haven't seen evidence of any voles in my garden, though, after one snow, I did see what were probably mouse tracks on top of where I planted the onions. The garden beds are raised, so hopefully, that helps.
I did not have any trouble with mine, and the soil is poor. It doesn't really sound as if you screwed up. Was the soil too moist maybe? or lacking in nutrients? I think I remember the same thing happening to my mother's flowers and that was mostly poor soil, so they grew top-heavy with poor stems.
So the snow is melting rapidly, which is great, but the big black files are out. I am already think drought even if we did have an early winter this year. I planted some sprouted onions last October in raised beds. Those look a little sad, but they are covered with straw and I think they might...
I had some leftover bachelor button seeds. I also processed the last of my herb harvest including basil, rosemary, and sage. There really isn't that much left.
I sat down last night with some of my dead flower heads. I watched a movie and spent a good 2 hours gathering seeds. It was very pleasant. I think I will need more places to plant see this spring though...
I gathered some basil seeds yesterday from some of the plants I have not yet prepped for next year. They really did not break apart well.
I would like to set aside a portion of my garden this year to be a tea garden. I am currently looking at different seeds to plant and wondering if my soil...
I planted them in some coffee cans as the ground is frozen. We had -40 temperatures for a bit, and I think that took them down despite my covering them with straw.
I might get something like that with a screen. I think the lack of time to do anything with it stops me. Plus, I have been fighting my cars lately. So much snow and one lost its 4-wheel drive—stupid automatic sensing technology and black cows that love to stand in the middle of the road at...
I admit to having a lot of seeds left to harvest for flowers next year, but I am not doing it. I have been working a lot (2 jobs) and don't feel inclined to sit there for hours while I rip each pod apart.
It must be the winter getting into my soul. Maybe Monday when I enjoy my only day off.
I have thought of planting alfalfa, but that is for a future when I can use more of my land. It is good for animals as it is full of nutrients. It's good for humans too.
