    Gardening with Rabbit Manure

Wild rabbits literally surround me. I keep wanting to scoop up everything where they visit frequently and add it to my garden. Of course, that is time-consuming. I might try something in the future as the wild ones are my friends, and I talk to them regularly when they come by for noms.

    Sprouting Onions

Two are ready to go. I will cover them in straw and hope for the best while keeping them out of the main batch of snow.

    Fixing soil

The rubber isn't fully attached and doesn't have a way to break down into compost. I didn't want to cut myself on sharp metal, so hence the rubber.

    Sprouting Onions

They are a bit itchy, so I finally changed my socks. The onions look just as good though I am not sure I will be able to get them in the pots I have as they are frozen outside.

    Sprouting Onions

Little Update: I have been sprouting roots, and about 2 feet of snow has dropped. This is going to be interesting.

    Sprouting Onions

It's all an experiment for us all. I also trying to winter some onions under straw. If everything goes then I will know what I am doing next August. :)

    Sprouting Onions

I was thinking of something like this and will see what I can rig up if I have time. For me, everything needs to be UV resistant. We lost a water tank because it dry rotted on the top. It's interesting. I once lived in an area where everything developed mold and wet rotted. Now everything dry rots.

    Sprouting Onions

Red onions. I am trying to winter three that sprang up this summer from dropped seeds. if they survive, I will start my crop for 2024 in august.

    Sprouting Onions

I have some window frames. I may try setting up a kind of temporary cold frame with them planted in coffee containers if I am able to tomorrow. The thing about the snow is, it takes forever to do anything.

    Sprouting Onions

I was thinking about that as well. I still don't have a place to put it though where it won't be subject to extreme temperatures and snow.

    Sprouting Onions

That’s what I’m thinking will happen. It’s just too tempting to plant them! It also will be problematic getting them into the ground as it’s already frozen. I still might try as the onion will just keep sprouting anyways.

    Sprouting Onions

Okay. There is snow on the ground, and we are headed for the negatives next week. This is a problem as a couple of my fall onions have sprouted despite my efforts. Do you think they would survive if I shipped out holes for them in my garden and covered them with straw? This is very...

    Recycled Items for Gardening Purposes

I found a couple of nice designs for boxes I can build to over-winter my herbs and sprout seeds for the spring. Now I need to build them in a good spot where they won't be frozen as the wind blows through and they get plenty of sun. I am in the dreaming and planning stage of my journey, as...

    Rodent Near the Garlic?

I will probably do that tomorrow. Today was a high of 14 with a windchill that brought it down to -8. Tomorrow is set to be 35 degrees. It is very bipolar here and I hope to get a good look without my cheeks going numb.

    Rodent Near the Garlic?

I didn't think so; maybe they were trying to find a place under the straw I put over the garlic to winter it. When I read up on garlic earlier this year and started my spring 2023 garden plan, I surrounded some of my core crops with garlic: nothing that doesn't enjoy having garlic nearby and a...

    Rodent Near the Garlic?

So, the latest snow came in last night, and in my review of my gardens, I saw little tracks across one of the places where I planted my garlic. It is either a mouse or a chipmunk that came to visit. Should I lift my straw and see if they are trying to dig up my garlic or leave it be? Could...

    Fixing soil

Exciting. Maybe when the next snow is through, I will see about a little fire. 🔥

    Fixing soil

The rubber bits come off sadly very easily. So, should I clear the area of brush and move it away from the tree and start a small fire under it? It would cook it nicely. It's perfect for the hot summers.

    Fixing soil

The snow finally melted a bit. It is supposed to come back tomorrow. Here is a picture of my compost bin. It is small, but it works. There is a large piece of rubber inside the tank, keeping anything from falling out in case you wonder about the door not completely closing.

    Fixing soil

The door is a little sad. I used a grinder to cut it out. I added rubber tubing around the edges to prevent myself from slicing myself up on sharp edges. I think it is too small, but I can add stuff next to it, let it break down for a minute, then add it to the tank later. At least those plants...
