I also discovered some mildew on some of my snap peas. Time for everything to come up. Maybe I will plant kale here next year as it’s in shade part of the day during the spring/fall.
I came out to my garden today and my peas are getting spots. Are they still good? Is it a soil problem? The same thing is happening to my beans. It could also be the low temperatures we have been having.
Any thoughts?
My husband and I are building a passive solar house and plan to put in a passive solar greenhouse. It depends on heating and cooling tubes to deliver air circulation. In some of what we have been reading, large tubs of water are included in the back wall, and the sun heats them, creating an...
Having an herb garden is on my to-do list for the future. I have several pots of herbs right now, but I love tea, and surprisingly the chamomile I planted last year survived into this year. I was about to harvest it in the spring when we got a frost, which broke off most of the flowers. It is...
One of my neighbors is planning on bringing in a truck of manure next year as that is what they used on her old farm and she knows it works. I kind of wanted to say, "hey, I live next 600 acres of BLM land that has cattle on it all the time. I will jump the fence and bring you a couple of bags...
I used the test kit on several parts of my garden. The ph is fin, but everything else is low, which is not surprising. My soil is clay, so it started without nutrients.
I am working on shutting everything down for the "long term" to take care of my soil. I will not be able to plant anything in...
I have been doing this regularly. I have quite a bit of basil growing and drying right now. I hope to have a better crop next year. I have clay soil, and I think that makes things slow to grow. At least, it seems like that.
I think I read this article last year. I will cover it and see how well it survives the winter. It did survive the -40 temperatures we had last year with -60 windchill, and I did not get a chance to cover it.
We just had our second "soft" freeze (it was only around 30 degrees). I will harvest the last of the tomatoes if they aren't too mushy today. There is still kale, spinach, romaine lettuce, broccoli, beans, and peas in the garden, so there are a few things that will not die back with the cold...
I think I will too. It’s also helping me to figure out what’s going on. I was a freelance writer for all the junk online and it never says anything. So, actual information is important to me.
I have been saving seeds from my bell peppers. I don't know if it is going right. They are inside, dry, and in an open container, but some are turning black. Are they molding?
I will talk about it from time to time. I am just fortunate to live where I can do this. In many places it is illegal, or you are forced to tie into the grid (which is several miles away from me). It has been an experience, and I will never look back. My husband and I control our electricity...
I wish we had leaves. It’s all ponderosa Pine around me. There are a couple of cottonwoods up the road.
So far I am mostly using compost and I got done straw to decompose into the soul
A bit and protect my garlic for the winter.
I had to do some business in North Dakota last year. I do not miss the wind either. It’s not so bad where I am at as it is not all the time.
I have debated hauling in some soil, but life is busy, so I will see if I have time. It’s not too bad, it’s just very depleted after the season.
