Also if anyone is making these that does not have elastic, you can make fabric ties that tie up in the back.

    Cucumbers starting

Ha Ha Ha. One of my big lessons learned from last year. A lot of the seed I got from individuals on Seed Savers Exchange was 1-3 years old. I was really careful- 1 seed per cell, no waste, right? What a waste! So many didn't germinate and I was watering, heating, and lighting pots of useless...

    Help identifying mystery onions

I was mowing a section of our new property for the first time and smelled something really familiar and aromatic. I stopped and looked around and found these clusters of green onions everywhere in the area, growing in little clumps. I broke off a piece and chewed on it and its spicier than a...

What Are You Planting Today, This Week, This Month?

I am trying the Alma Paprika for the first time this year. I tried bell peppers last year and the season here just wasn't long enough. There were tons of peppers, but none got more than 2 inches long. Fingers crossed on these!

    n95 dust masks

My biggest pet peeve even before all this mess: Wisconsinites (in my area) are TERRIBLE at covering their coughs. When they do, they use their hands! Ok, I have two pet peeves; the other being no one will ever say "excuse me" to get to something at the store if I'm in the way. They'll crowd my...

    n95 dust masks

The issue is they still aren’t sure if you gain immunity by having had it, and for how long that lasts. it’s also not certain yet that you only carry the virus while you are sick. It could be akin to chicken pox which you carry forever and may have further symptomatic episodes from. There have...

    seeking pea and bean advice

I started them inside, but they were still quite small once it was time to put them out: 4” tall and skinny like a bar straw. The starts I got from a neighbor (from home depot originally) were about #2 pencil sized and did amazingly well. My starts ended up martini onion sized- hardly worth peeling.

    What are you canning now?

A friend mentioned to me yesterday nursery’s should be allowed to remain open as an essential mental health service for “us people.” I don’t quite see why they couldn’t run on a skeleton staff and allow online/phone orders for pickup. We could help keep a whole industry afloat and keep people...

    What are you canning now?

Hopefully those who would not be canning safely will be too inept to grow anything to can . Have you seen those awful 1-minute videos showing people how to grow veggies from their grocery vegetables? Theres one that shows them potting half a bell pepper full of seeds. Enjoy your pot of rot...

    What are you canning now?

I usually do not use Pectin. In a pinch I once used gelatin. Not even plain, I had box of strawberry Jello and tossed a bit into my mixed berry jam because it didn't seem to be setting. I usually try to use a fruit naturally high in pectin to mix into whatever my main fruit is. I've also boiled...

    seeking pea and bean advice

I got Walla Walla onion seeds last year that were free from someone on SSE because they were 2 years old. Germination was still very good. I still have some left and I'm gonna give them a go. I just wasn't happy with how tiny they ended up by the end of the season compared to those I got from...

Thank you @Eleanor for the specific temperature guidance. Also I totally would have been on here in May asking why my runner beans were leafless, so thats a great beginner hint.

    seeking pea and bean advice

Thank you @Zeedman ! Very good to know I won't need to separate them to save seeds. I have a great spot for the runner beans I think - a spot that gets about 2 hours of shade right during midday. They'll avoid the highest temps there. The tip on them being slow to pod is helpful. As far as the...

    How you keeping yourself busy?

In my retail experience, department manager/head is the sweet spot. You get managed less and have a decent set of responsibilities, but there are still enough people above you to escalate things to. Its very hard to make store manager (only so many positions) and assistant managers get abused to...

    seeking pea and bean advice

I am growing peas (Amish snap) and beans (Scarlet Runner, Christmas Lima, Golden Butter Wax, and Asparagus) for the first time ever. I've been looking them up online and such but am wondering if anyone has general (or variety-specific) advice for a first-timer. Any methods you've developed for...

Looking to trade for vegetable seeds

Hi all. I hope people will see this - this area has been dead for awhile. I'm re-focusing my planting to only vegetables that both people in our two-person household will eat and work well with my short-ish growing season (110-120 days). I'm going through my seeds and I have several that don't...
