    What are you canning now?

That was my thought. I hope its not all going to waste. Now that I'm out in the countryside I doubt folks here are as far removed from baking their own bread as say my former neighbors in SoCal (obviously generalizing). I'm looking for the silver lining and thinking home gardens...

I’m advising not to engage. Clearly facts and reason are not playing a role here.

    What are you canning now?

I'm seeing a lot of things go out of stock/into high demand that normally do not. I buy my vegetable seeds primarily from individuals (via Etsy) and am seeing shops post that they are stopping sales to catch up with unusually high demand. Coupling that with the run on flour and yeast (neither of...

What Did You Do In The Garden?

4.5 yard-hours today, but I'm wiped out. I think I did too much. I mowed down a giant patch of sticker bushes (ouch). Then I finally selected a good spot to put in a veggie patch. I'm not sure it'll be ready for this growing season, but I'm getting it started anyhow. It gets all day sun and the...

What Did You Do In The Garden?

I managed 3.5 hours outside today. Not great but very greatly improved over being bed-bound a few days ago. I got lattice put up to plant peas against, and planted one of my potted cherry trees (fresh bark in foreground). I got peas started in peat pots in a garage window. The trellis is above...

    n95 dust masks

I was speaking with friends recently who were bemoaning the acts of individuals who have refused to follow guidelines (Florida spring break fiasco) and I thought of all those PSAs/propaganda posters from WWII about avoiding unnecessary travel, growing a victory garden, rationing, etc. I’m really...

You keep comparing it to the flu. If it’s only as bad as it is it will be by a combination of luck and proper social distancing and other prevention measures. This virus is spread twice as easily and is ~ 10x more fatal than the flu. It’s only been widely in the US for about a month (you’re...

Looking for asparagus, potatoes, onions online

I’m looking to purchase some asparagus crowns, seed potatoes, and onion sets. Does anyone have a good online source for these? I’ve only purchased seeds online so far.

    Ready for Self-Sufficient Gardening?

I grew up in Vancouver, WA. Our home never seemed to be in a “swampy” area (despite ponds and creeks at the back of our development) until we removed a couple huge old willows in the yard whose roots were causing plumbing troubles. Sure enough every year after that we had constant standing water...

    n95 dust masks

We bought a HUGE bag of pinto beans at Costco for a pittance when we were quite broke. It took us 3 years to finish it. Obviously we weren’t eating them all the time. Finishing that bag felt like a major achievement, lol.

I absolutely agree this fiasco will speed up our country’s acceptance of work-from-home and online education. I think long term we’ll be able to attribute this to a major shift towards telecommuting for those working computer-based jobs. Ultimately also a great thing for the environment, helping...

    2019 recap & 2020 plans

Thank you! I did plan on composting, I had a small pile at our last place and I loved how much waste it cut back on. My real holdup is weather- my instinct is to put the pile far off from the house due to rats/mice, but that means for a couple months outta the year I neither have to shovel...

    2019 recap & 2020 plans

They did shockingly well! All the starts were off of two grocery store specimens started inside in January, transplanted out in in late May. They were in poor hard garden soil, and I think that hindered size. But they were in black fabric grow bags, and I think that gave them lots of warmth. We...

    2019 recap & 2020 plans

Hi all! I started my first ever garden last year, using all the history on this thread to guide me and solve issues as they arose. It was a smashing success for a first try, I was really proud of it. I wanted to share some pics! This is the raised bed I put in, about 4.5’ x 40’. Weeks of work...

    Are these aphids?

Update: I went back out a couple days ago to check on things. The little buggers are still there, but the population hasn’t recovered from my previous pruning of heavily infested leaves. I still don’t know what they are, but they fall off (or jump) so easily I decided not to use neem oil. I...

    Are these aphids?

Thank you all. I was unable to get a better photo, they are very tiny and I have the shakiest hands! I haven’t been able to do anything since I posted. I’ve been working non-stop and tonight when I got home-after a dreadful day- it was pouring rain. At least it felt right for my mood. After a...

    Are these aphids?

I do have flowers by the veggies. Only the marigolds have bloomed so far. Snapdragons, zinnias, and nasturtiums haven’t bloomed yet

    Are these aphids?

These are all over my tomatoes and peppers and favor the leaves of lower branches that had contact with the ground. They don’t look like what I’m used to, but some photos online look close-ish. Also an unidentified larva. Will Neem oil work to treat? I removed heavily-infested branches, but when...
