    Bulb help needed

Everyone, thank you so much for your bulb wisdom! From what you’ve all shared, I think what I’ll do is go ahead and plant them in large pots indoors and harden them off before placing the pots outdoors in late April or early May. My last frost date is mid May. I had hoped to put them in my...

    Bulb help needed

hello all! I just received two types of bulbs I ordered on seed savers exchange, dahlias and daffodils. The daffodils already have green tops on them, the dahlias look a bit less advanced. Embarrassingly enough, I didn’t know they were bulbs and not seeds. My ground is still covered in snow...

    A henless garden, 2019

I spent a few hours after work trying to dig an ice ditch for all the water to run off and pushing water out of our garage, which is flooded 3-4” deep. And this is just from the rain, there’s still so much snow I feel like it’ll take weeks to thaw, then months to dry out.

    2019 tomato list

This is my first year ever even paying attention to the tomato type I’m growing! A few times in the past I’ve just grabbed a baby plant at the hardware store and stuck it in some dirt. This year I’m starting from seed. I’ve got Amish paste, Apricot Brandywine, and Dwarf Russian Swirl. Excited to...

The fruit wall... forerunner of the European greenhouse

Why haven’t greenhouses caught up to advancements in household glass yet? Probably cost. Double or triple pane windows with vacuum or argon between them can provide considerable insulation. In a greenhouse I imagine you could increase the pane spacing considerably since their purpose is to...

Care to share some very general vegetable growing rules/guidelines?

Oh I’m sorry, I though my zone would appear near my title. I’ll have to add that. I’m zone 4- twin cities MN. I have lots planned for the garden this summer: pumpkins, watermelons, carrots, beets, turnips, broccoli, onions, peppers, bean, peas, and Brussels sprouts and A few others. I’m just...

Care to share some very general vegetable growing rules/guidelines?

I'm trying to decide how much area I need to clear for my veggie garden. To do that I had to decide what to grow (done), buy seeds (done) and decide how many of each item to grow (my current troubles). There are just two of us here, but I'm hoping to have enough food to can/freeze/otherwise...

    Craigslist and Other Bargains

I found a free metal swing set frame recently. I'm going add some twine and stakes and use this to grow my beans and peas on this year! Hoping I can get it, the seller told me to check back in a couple weeks because its in a snowbank right now. Looking at another foot of snow this weekend, so it...

Hello All! Garden newbie in a cold place

Thank you. I purchased from Seed Savers (some from the site, most on the exchange). I hope it works out. I've had a poor track record with standard store seeds and I'm trying to support open pollination/non-patented plants.

Hello All! Garden newbie in a cold place

A very similar trek then: I was Vancouver/Olympia, then San Diego and Santa Barbara! I am between suburbs and rural here. Not many deer, but I've seen bunnies and oh so many squirrels. And I know these squirrels don't give a darn about the hot pepper trick. I got the extra spicy mix for my...

Hello All! Garden newbie in a cold place

Hi all! I've just relocated to the twin cities, MN. I was last living in southern California for about 10 years, and Washington state before that. As a child in WA I did a lot of gardening with the family in our suburban backyard. In California, due to space restrictions and an inability to...
