    Arrrrhhh Not Again

Looks very familiar. It's one of several caterpillars that feed at night and hide just under the soil in the daytime; variously called cutworm, corn ear worm or army worm. If you're lucky you can scratch the soil and turn them up, not far from the plant they fed on last night. If the plants are...

The Disappearance of Coarse Stone Ground corn meal

I think Bay is referring to pouring boiling water over the meal and letting it soak for a while before you make your batter. It gives a softer moister texture to your corn bread.

She got me a Sumac start.

Sumac is a very adaptable plant. I often see it growing wherever it can in the inner cities. Abandoned lots often have it growing there. The locals seldom know they have a useful plant growing right under their noses.

Warfarin has a yo yo effect. It tends to wear off and then peak again a few hours after taking another dose. Turmeric, provided you get enough, helps your body maintain the right level, along with all the other benefits. Warfarin is the most common poison seen in emergency rooms. I never heard...

Don't buy it in capsule form. There isn't enough turmeric there to do any good. You can get your kids to drink it and enjoy it if you make what they call golden milk in India. Use a smell sauce pan and tilt it so you are using only a small part. Put a tablespoon or two of powdered turmeric into...

You'd never get the curry smell out of a house where it was coked frequently . The smell does not come from turmeric but from the more pungent spices. Turmeric has a very light odor. It does stain everything it touches but if the surface it stains can take a Clorox solution it bleaches right...

I don't normally harvest the entire clump at the same time. I usually just dig down at the edge and get the piece I need. The taste is stronger if dried and ground but I often use it fresh as well. Drying and grinding takes a lot of time and you have to be careful. Anything turmeric touches gets...

There is hardly any Southeast Asian recipe that doesn't include turmeric as one of the spices. It is one of the main ingredients of Indian curry. It's kind of an oddball though. It doesn't add much taste of its own but intensifies the tastes of the herbs and spices it is used with. The leaves...

Not hard to dig at all. The rhizomes are quite shallow and often show at the surface. I usually mulch them when that happens so they don't sunburn.

It can be grown anywhere the Summers are warm, It likes heat. It reproduces from a rhizome and the roots are inactive during the rest period. It should be kept in a potting soil that is just moist enough to keep it from drying out. Too much water will rot it at this time. It is very slow to...

My turmeric clump is just starting its yearly die back. The roots should be ready to dig in a few weeks. I only have a limited amount so PM me with your address if you want to reserve a start. I think I'll move it this Winter to give it some fresh soil. It's been in the same place over 5 years.
