I love the Fedco catalog. It used to be a small company started by old hippies, but gets larger all the time. They are local here, so we can pick up trees or heavier items. I love the poems and other commentary on each seed variety. Back before the internet, you had to fill out the order...
I'm glad I'm not the only one who struggles with technology. @journey11 , they didn't even have computers when I was in college!
I remember when they first took the library card catalog away. It seemed like such a challenge, although now that seems silly.
The first time I tried to buy...
I've seen this before, and found it took some practice to do it. It felt almost as much about technique as it was about strength, and when I did it regularly, my knee hurt.
I'm with you on getting stronger! I am actually underweight right now, due to some health problems. It would be nice to...
I love homemade lasagna or pizza. We enjoy asparagus or broccoli souffle with vegetables we freeze in season, or a roasted turkey.
@canesisters , at the risk of being one of those people who diagnoses all your health problems, if diet doesn't help, you might want to have them run a test for...
Last year, it was very dry here and we had great foliage. This year, it's only a little dry. We were complaining that the colors were not so great, almost brown, but then just this week everything began to burst into bright color. It seems later this year, but that could be false memory.
Our school was lucky that one of our teachers that retired decided to become a master gardener. For her project, she planted bulb and perennial beds in front of the school and along various areas along side the building. Then she photographed and provided all kinds of information about each...
I enjoy arboretums and botanical gardens.
I can't remember which book I was reading, -maybe The Sixth Extinction (?), but I was surprised to learn how many of the native plants in our region (things like burdock) are not native at all.
When I see a non-native flowering tree that I'm trying to...
very strange. I have one melon left in the refrigerator. If it hasn't gone by, then maybe I will try it (with apologies to the chickens, - they love those seeds).
I didn't grow pumpkin but I like sweet winter squash in a soup. I make one with red lentils, ginger, turmeric, and other curry spices. It's a good soup for the winter.
My ipad is old and got very slow. I got this new chromebook pro with a keyboard. I like having the keyboard, love that it is fast, and I love having a touchscreen.
My big question though, is why the google operating system makes it almost impossible to save a photo that someone sends me into...
I think we are at 80% free and reduced. The kids eat anything because there isn't always much eating at home. And even though it might be against regulations, classroom teachers slip food into their backpacks to take home.
I have one variety of small white turnip (oasis) that I really enjoy in salads. The larger yellowish turnips and kohlrabi I'm less fond of. I cut them up, toss them with olive oil and roast them in a hot oven like oven fries.
A little turnip is good in barley soup, too.
I think my friend's sister lives in a town called Newburg. We will drive a little ways from her house to see totality, if there is not grid-lock happening everywhere.
I am headed to the solar eclipse too, except first I am going to a wedding in Massachusetts on the 19th. We will jump in the car Sunday morning and drive 17 hours or so to stay with a friend's sister in Indiana. It seems like a crazy idea, but DH was really into it. I am on vacation from...
I don't do the dispatch or the processing here. I suppose I would get over the squeamishness and feel good about my self-sufficiency if I forced myself to do it, but my friend who has lots of experience doing her own says she has it down to 1/2 per bird, start to finish.
There is a place not...
Weeded, weeded, mulched, weeded and mulched. And still a bit of a jungle out there! Crushed some bugs (cucumber and potato beetles).
Picked a decent amount of peas. Strawberries finally slowing down a little. Yesterday's batch we are trying out drying. We already froze a lot and made jam...
I try to always use a basket when grocery shopping. Pretty easy with a family of 2. I can run through the aisles, sliding between carts. Sometimes my basket is very heavy by the time I get to the checkout, but it is so much easier to maneuver around the store.
