They have these hats at LLBean, but were sold out of children's in my size. I ordered from a Canadian company and their hat has a much easier to use fastening system under the chin. And I like that the hat was made by our Canadian neighbors (instead of in China).
Indoors, I often wear my Crocs, and I have one pair that is oversized (I find croc sizes are quite varied based on what country they are made in). Outdoors, I have my muck boots that I wear for chores, and those take two pair easily too. If I want to wear two pair when cross-country skiing...
My San Rafael sister is also complaining about the chilly temperatures there @ninnymary !
This morning it is 18 below here. The chickens will be miserable. I am layering up to go out there and taking @digitS' advice for two pair of wool socks. My feet are so comfortable at the moment...
I tend to move around quickly, and last year there was ice under the fluffy snow. I went down hard on my left side, and that shoulder wasn't quite right for about a year. The good news: the two eggs I had slipped into my right pocket were unharmed!
Sounds like yoyo temperatures in a lot of places!
Our cold rain did bring a coating of ice to everything @digitS' . I haven't been out yet this morning, but I am hoping there is enough crunchy snow to avoid an ice rink effect in the yard and on the roads.
We had about 5" of perfect fluffy snow yesterday, which made the cross-country skiing perfect! This morning, it is pouring rain and 25. We are glad we didn't clear the snow yet, as we would have created a skating rink. It is supposed to warm to 35, and then plummet below zero again at night...
I bought a different variety of paprika pepper, sweet potato slips, and peanut seed from Southern Seed Exchange. Everything did reasonably well (in a hoop house here).
I put the peanuts out to dry for a couple weeks, but the rodents hauled them all off one day. Lots of shells in the wood pile.
Luckily, our Arctic cold blast is supposed to be short-lived. Tomorrow night dropping below zero and very windy, then a high of 5 degrees F on Friday, below zero again Friday night, but warming up and snowing on Saturday. I won't be able to look my chickens in the eye, as they will not be...
I actually like Fedco's 19th century catalog, especially the long descriptions and mixed opinions on a variety. And I'm a sucker for the poems, - I often end up buying the vegetables with the poems.
Occasionally, I'll look up a photo of a variety if the description seems outlandish.
I do...
No snow here. We thought it was snowing at one point, but it was some kind of debris being blown around out of the trees.
We need a lot more rain to counteract this drought. My friends just had a new well drilled, and our neighbor's who are on a spring just had a water tanker deliver some...
We also have very thick insulation in the walls and good solar gain. It has been a warm fall, but we did have a hard freeze and ended up having a fire a couple of times.
DH likes a warm house. I don't really mind because my fingers and toes are always cold.
I love having chickens, but I can imagine wanting to travel more, especially after I retire. You can always get some fresh eggs at the farmer's market.
And if you start to really miss having chickens, they are certainly easy to come by!
