How old are the seeds you just bought?

It’s been way too many decades since genetic classes. There are a given number of chromosomes that make a sheep a sheep vs being a tree. Then within the chromosomes are genes with recessive or dominant effects as well as interactions between genes and modifiers. There are millions of...

You are changing genetics. Realize I’m over simplifying what is going on. Yes, a major environmental change can influence what genetics express themselves.

In theory, the heirloom genetics are the same. But you are talking of millions (possibly) of genes and gene interactions. What was in the beginning may not be the same 10 generations later. Now the physical look, may be extremely similar due to the fact that that is easily selected for or...

Question on hair sheep. Work with a sheep breeder, he says hair sheep have a different odor than regular sheep. Plus they don’t like associating with other breeds of sheep. Did mention, great mothers and used to place embryos into.

    Is Alfalfa ...

I use 8 good, clean bales of straw every year to mulch my garden. Many housewives use good straw as decorations. Farmer has to make money. Hay prices don’t vary much. Hay prices rise, more ground dedicated to hay. Prices go down, hay becomes corn ground. So price per bale stays relatively...

If they don’t grow new seed, then they must of had a huge quantity of seed initially. Seed is pelletized for 3 reasons. 1). Add something the plant needs to germinate-lime on alfalfa seed. 2). Planting ease-clay on small seeds. 3). Since they charge more for pelletized seed-better margins.

When you save your own seed-especially if you hand pick the plants-you will change the genetics. In the seed industry, keeping the same genetics is the #1 problem. It is why hybrids only last so long.

Location where seed is grown does not change genetics. Quality seed companies do not blend seed. If vigor is less one batch, you will never notice it until blended with a vigorous lot. IF you have an uneven germ, usually blended seed.

How old are the seeds you just bought?

All seed from a quality company have been germ tested. What they don’t tell you is cold germ or vigor. IF they had to grow all the seed the year before selling it and had to grow seed in their geographic area, seed would multiply in price, your selection would be much less and in some...

    Is Alfalfa ...

Find that interesting as very little (I know of none) is GMO alfalfa here. Too expensive plus most growers want some grass mix in their alfalfa-larger market.

    Santa Delivered

I get exercise at work planting plots, walking plots, digging roots, walking/inspecting fields and moving 50# bags of seed around. Maybe I should call it “natural work out” and charge people to help? Just let them think it’s a useless activity and they will be all in.
