I got so anxious to get started that when my seed order arrived, I started making seed tapes. No more guesswork on the spacing, no more "winging it" or "eye-balling it". It's my first time making them. I am so ready to plant!
It grows wild EVERYWHERE out here! We have tons of it all over our property. I'm in the Sierras. We have well-drained but mostly clay soil. It also grows all along the American River and in wild areas all around Sacramento and northern California.
It is NASTY tasting. It works like magic...
I *love* Baker Creek. When I place my next seed order, I will be ordering from them.
This year, however, I got the majority of my seeds from an ebayer called "mozybeaufarms." He is a retired Marine and sells only non-GMO, non-hybrid, open-pollinated seed. Lots of heirloom melons and such...
I've been itching to start my seedlings, so yesterday I finally bought myself a tray of 72 Jiffy seed starter pellets with the separate cells, etc., and a couple of the low-wattage 'twisty bulbs' as we call them that give off natural daylight to use as plant lights (we did so successfully...
I thought I would revive this thread since this is something I just learned about today! Didn't even know what "seed tape" was until I saw someone post about it over on BYC. I am about to get started preparing seeds for this year's vegetable garden. For those of you experienced with...
Hi neighbor. LOL! (To Gryeyes... we live, like, 4 miles from each other.)
Somerset is in El Dorado County about half-way between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe as the crow flies. We are closest to Placerville and Plymouth.
OMG, I know where Tollhouse is! Haven't been there in YEARS! We used to drive up from Merced through there on my way to my aunt's house in Auberry or my cousin's house in Northfork. What a small world !
Fresno State! Bulldogs! Red wave!
(I didn't go to Fresno State, but I wanted to.... I'm originally from Merced, then spent 25 years in Sacramento, currently in the Sierra mountains about half-way between Sacto and Tahoe.)
We need to stop talking about how miserable the new system is. This is not a free speech format. They do not want to hear how horrible it is. Yesterday, they locked the threads where people were discussing how awful it is. I suspect this thread soon will also be locked because they don't...
It's not so much for me that I don't like the format, but the new setup slows down my system & causes me to get a Norton warning that system resources are being utilized by the site. It runs a lot of background scripts to give functionality to the new features, but it froze my computer up 3...
I live 4 miles from you & we're fixin' to put meyer lemon, miniature tangerine, and kaffir lime trees in half wine barrels on the deck & will wrap them in clear plastic when it freezes.
Lookit all the BYCers showing up over here today cuz we're having BYC withdrawals. Come on, fess up, I know I ain't the only one!
I let the chickens loose in the garden today to do some tilling for me. :)
I saw that in one of the seed catalogs or on a website or something... was hoping to find someone that had actually used it and find out what they think of it! Thanks! :)
You guys are awesome and have the best advice. Thank you so much!
I have a GINORMOUS southwest-facing window in my kitchen where I'll be placing the seed trays for sprouting. It makes my kitchen like a greenhouse most of the time anyway (even in the winter), so I was thinking that would be...
I planted some this last fall, and they did really, really well and were growing like mad.... until the chickens got over the fence into the garden and ate the whole bloody lot. :barnie
Yep, those are great. Thanks, but judging by your response and as I re-read my original question, I think I might have been a little vague in my original post.
I am looking for advice on using what I already have without having to buy a lot. I'm thinking reduce/reuse/recycle, trying to be as...
I've been gardening off and on most of my adult life, and while some plants do well when you put the seeds directly into the ground, some plants do better when you use transplanted seedlings, which I have always purchased at nurseries, home improvement/gardening stores, from other gardeners and...
