Novelty Vegetable Seeds and Seed Trading

This one I'm looking at looks to be called Black Cherry Russian. I'm going to have to keep an eye out for that one, Japanese Black Trifele! Seems very versatile with great flavor. I'm looking for something that is kinda odd, that I'm not familiar with. Possibly something that may excel in...

Novelty Vegetable Seeds and Seed Trading

Oh wow! I'm more near Metro Detroit, so maybe will have to be on the lookout for something at Eastern Market. I, by no means, "need" seeds. I like to try to grow things I've never grown before purely out of curiosity. I'll have about a dozen different types of plants this year, but may use 6-10...

Novelty Vegetable Seeds and Seed Trading

Good afternoon everyone! Just a Michigander slowly emerging from hibernation! Back on TEG for my 2nd season. There are a couple of questions I have for anyone/everyone. First, I don't have a lot of gardening real estate to work with and have gotten big into container gardening actually. I...

    Benefits of Mulching Contianers

Thanks for the input Mary! I also live in a cool weather area, here in Michigan. This last week or so has dried the soil out to no end though. So your mulching cut your watering down in half then, more or less? I added pine bark mulch, so there's really no downfall to mulching then?

Major, I'm always in awe at your harvest photos! I see that you post new photos since I watch your thread and they always surpass expectations. If I retain even a quarter of the stuff you ramble on about I'll be set for life with fruits and veggies. Even wayyyyy up here in Michigan! :thumbsup

    Benefits of Mulching Contianers

Good evening folks! Not sure who has seen my previous posts, but I'm a new gardener and have been experimenting with various vegetables in smallish-sized containers. Now understanding the many benefits of bigger and better containers I have attempted to mulch the top layers of these containers...

    5 Gallon Bucket Composting

Flowerbug, What I have currently is a 5 gallon bucket with about a dozen or so worms crawling around. Everything I've been doing is small scale (especially compared to some of the pros on TEG). I understand it's a long process that typically takes months to create usable soil. I don't water it...

    5 Gallon Bucket Composting

What I was more worried about was the natural acidity of the coffee grounds. I did drill a dozen or so holes in the bottom of the first bucket to drip excess moisture into the reservoir bucket underneath.

    5 Gallon Bucket Composting

No, I just keep the scraps in there until I unload them outside in my 5 gallon bucket.

    5 Gallon Bucket Composting

Good Sunday Afternoon! So I'm a couple weeks or so into my 5 gallon bucket composting project. I believe I've done enough research to grasp the basics to composting, but would like others' opinions on a few things. I keep an empty coffee can in my fridge with fruit and veggie scraps and...

    Tomato Trimmings

How quickly do they begin to develop roots? I wondered the same thing but wasn't sure how well it worked. Will it work on any vegetable plant sucker? Could you share a few pictures? Only a curious young gardener.

    Rescuing Free Plants

Would love to see some progress pictures from beginning and throughout the revival process! I have my project going right now on two near-dead berry plants. More or less just sticks and want to see how others revive their plants. Best of luck!

Thanks for the welcome Valley! There's for sure some treasured memories with my parents and sisters, but I'm excited for this next phase. Practicing my container gardening abilities since I'll be heading to an apartment most likely.

    Container Gardening: Odds & Ends

Hey sounds great Titan, can't wait! I guess I underestimated the size of the pots I would end up needing. Not sure if you read through the thread, by it's my first year gardening and a whole lot of trial and error. Will look forward to your more lengthy reply!

New Member - Good Morning from MI!

Baymule, I'm just a spry 21 (soon 22) year old. Just graduated college and will be moving into a place of my own sooner than later. I don't have much experience with gardening and was just, more or less, running an experiment. I didn't think my seeds would even sprout. I don't have the ability...

$.69 Berry "Plants" Too Good to be True?

Oh that's great Sumi! Same kind of scenario then. I have a decent mix of soil I put together and am trying to grow them in containers. If I can revive them from the dead then awesome! If not I'm only out $.69 or €.59 haha. Any fertilizer or "foods" you've fed it with to help it a bit?

    Container Gardening: Odds & Ends

Thanks for your input, Steve! There's always pros and cons to anything and you mentioned a couple in your reply. This, right now, is the best I can do if I want to garden. I'll take this opportunity and run with it if that's all I have. I'll only get better with each season. Gotta get going on a...

$.69 Berry "Plants" Too Good to be True?

While on my last run to the outdoor garden center I saw various fruit "plants" marked 90% off. I put plants in quotations because it more closely resembles a stick (see photos). I read up on dormant stages of berry plants like these and have a basic understanding with how that works. I have the...
