We've sprouted mung beans to use as bean sprouts instead of buying sprouts, but because of the short summer we have, we generally don't risk taking up space and resources with seed that might not be true to type, especially now that it is just my old parents to manage the things I run home to...
Just had a thought, we have some pine tree stumps that are probably 2-3 feet across and 20-30 years old that were just cut and left when house #3 was built... well, giant huckleberry bushes grow out of them! Maybe if you have "extra" stumps, you can drill out the center of one, let it rot out a...
Yeah, you can tell "baby" carrots are just diced and peeled larger carrots because the center part looks just like a large carrot.
As for dipping in chlorine, they say nothing about concentration used. Plus many use chlorine to sterilize well water... and is chlorine used in drinking water from...
At least in WA, when we have a big pine tree stump we want to get rid of... we get a good long wood bit, and drill a few hundred holes into the top of the stump. Rain water fils up the stumps, bugs show up, and the stump gets soggy and rotten in a few years.
At least you can grow them. LOL
From about 40 tomato plants last year, a cooler than usual summer, we got all of about 4 lbs of tomatos, all cherry ones. Not kidding.
I only expect 2 buttercup squash to mature per plant, so... yeah... 12 does not seem unreasonable. LOL
Yeah, depends on where you are, variety, and competition. I sell gold nugget, early girl, beaver lodge and sweetie tomato starts from 1-2 each, in a 9 or 18 ounce drinking cup respectively.
I've never thought anything was really meant to grow upside down, well, maybe except bats...
All the plant tries to do while hanging is to grow upwards anyway.
Interesting, how many months were the plants alive? In the potted ones on my balcony, I just use pure miracle grow soil that was already used once from seed starting/left overs. They usually start to set flowers at about 2 months old or so. If the soil is too rich, they might not want to set...
Some tomatoes do better in buckets than others. I find the small cherries do great in a bucket, while the larger things like early girl don't like the restriction.
No, I live in one of the developments near the edge of town. It's a small town here, so the commute is just 3 miles. Family housing does still have plots for rent though. It may be cheap, but it is also really noisy as one of my co workers who lives there tells me. Did you go to OSU?
I can't speak for all Asian melons, but the Golden Sweet one, if that's the golden colored striped ones I get in the Asian markets, are never that sweet really... they are sweet compared to other Asian veggies though, that's for sure. LOL
They have a different flavor and texture compared to...
Thanks!
It is pretty nice to have a green screen from the sterile development living. The first year I found I didn't have ANY bugs or bees around... so I planted flowers last year and I'm sure my neighbors love (read hate) the fact that I have attracted bees and bugs. LOL I hope that the...
Wow, you're real hot there... to our standards, you started late! LOL
That heat with your light might be the issue. Indoor temps when I start tomato seeds run around 68, and outdoor temps are in the 30-40's... With that high summer heat as I call it, that you have there now, you probably need...
I'm totally off the wall, but the top one reminds me of morning glory and the bottom one reminds me of wild raspberry/black caps or black berry starts...
Granted... I don't grow lettuce or peppers. LOL But do konw pepper sprouts look like tomato sprouts, neither of which looks like that.
Shade... ah yes shade... the bane of my balcony growing. It faces due north on a map...and is completely covered by the upstairs balcony! So there is about 1 hour of "direct" sunlight during sunrise and sunset ... if you can call sun up and sun down with reflections from the clouds "direct" LOL...
