Ah, yeah, that stemy part is usually what is under ground as far as I know. Didn't think too much about the temp, but that would be another compounding issue with indoor growing. When jan rolls around, our apartment temp goes from about 64 to 70 because I've got the egg incubator and 3-4 lamps...
I put the lights about 1 inch from the top of the seedlings. I find that they get long necks when started inside, largely because I put the seed about 1/8 of an inch under, while outside, they very well and often end up about 1/2-3/4 of an inch if not more deeper. This shallow planting that...
That's pretty neat!
I'm a sucker for more work so I tend to start things about 2x the time you are "recomended" to start them. LOL
I've got 3 week old tomato starts that aren't going out into the garden till may 20th if that is any indication of my impatience... and short cool summers. I don't...
LOL
I thought saggy pants went out with the 90's.
Baggy pants were of the 80's right?
Skinny jeans that give girls AND boys muffin tops are what's "in" as far as I know.
But what do I know. I was born in the mid 80's and wear baggy guy pants because girl pants are utterly stupid when it...
Average about 20 bucks on seeds. Don't grow a big variety and garden isn't that big. Many types of seeds I use for 2-3 years so don't need to buy them yearly. I save some, but re-buy hybrids, things that don't mature in our area, and things that would end up rather unpleasant if the bees had...
I think as soon as you label it human food it is 2x the cost. Then put it in a grocery store for humans and it is 2x the 2x cost for a 4x the cost. Package it in small bags and you'll have a 5x the cost. Put it in a speciality store, and it will be 10x the cost. Such as 4.99 for a 20 ounce bag...
I start everything inside, but find that the one time I tried lettuce all inside under grow lighting, the leaves weren't very crisp. They were big green luscious leaf type plants, just not much to them. I attributed it to the 65F inside temps night and day, with no wind or mechanical stimulation...
I grow a red amaranth that we eat like a spinach. Not sure if it is a real "red amaranth", or just an Asian veggie called amaranth. It grows like weeds here.
I agree... there is only one way to have live morning glory flowers inside... and that is to grow the entire plant inside.
Pretty effect you are describing, but you'll have to go with fake ones. Any cut morning glory even in a glass of water ends up wilting in an hour. Plus, if you touch the...
Yep, they sprouted in about a week. Probably about a 25% germination rate. The dried fruits are at least 2 years old though. We get them in 5lb bags in the international district so they lats a while. Many were immature seeds too.
I just started my starts indoors for both cool season and warm season stuff. Cool season stuff will be ready to plant outside in mid march, and warm season stuff will be in mid may.
And I've just started about 20 goji plants from fruit I stole out out of the pot my mom was starting to boil. LOL...
For pole, I have always used blue lake. They give me beans for the month up till frost. I plant kentucky wonder or nash bush beans, they come much earlier.
I LOVE gold nugget!!!
They do awesome potted on a north facing balcony. LOL
Last year was bust for all tomatoes except the gold nugget in the cool summer. The year before I had gold nugget tomatoes before july!
However, frost has always hit before my gold nuggets stopped flowering... is...
Here winters usually freeze the top 1-2 inches of soil for maybe a week or two at most. I tend to put out the potato seeds middle of march because that is when I go home for spring break to plant. That said, soil is probably in the 40's at that time, and more often than not, the tiny taters I...
Here in the PNW, we always just waited for the plants to go dormant, and moved them in the fall after all the leaves fell off. I'd pick a time to move it when it is not actively growing or actively flowering as those times are tough on the plant.
As for survival. We have this one hybrid tea...
I remember when I was little I'd get my little brother carry a box around as I filled it with slugs. Just went around picking them up. Hundreds of slugs, if not thousands every week or two. One time though I filled one of those paper boxes that hold reams of paper half full with slugs climbing...
Congrats! Gardening is so fun. I drove 300 miles to get home just to plant some trees, and make that trip every 6-8 weeks to maintain my garden back home.
