    It was 16.3 degrees here last night in Northern Michigan.....sunny and 32.2 now. You know it's cold when you want to go to Antartica to warm up....:cool: We had several -7 and -10 degree nights a few weeks back....we also had record highs...almost 60...unheard of this time of year for here...

    skeeter9....Puff Balls grow on the ground...not in the trees....there are some fungi that do grow on trees...but not these....

    Try cooking one and make sure it's not too mature.......it's different from regular mushrooms in taste and texture.....and PLEASE make sure what you are picking ARE Puff Balls and not some other fungus. They have NO stems....try a bite and see...you may like them.:)

    I slice them...ONLY when they are white inside.....roll them in flour and fry them in butter...lightly salt them as well...just like I do my Morels. YUM!!!!

    Wisher, you are correct....young ones are white and when they mature they turn grey and dry out and produce tons of smokey spores. When you step on them they make a cloudy dust storm dropping new spores all over the place.
