    What kind of squash?

What kind of squash have you grown? Or thrown into your compost? Looks pumpkin-ish to me, but I know there are many types of round summer and winter squash. This years volunteer in my compost looks to be a butternut squash, even though I haven't grown any or bought any from the store.

    Elephant Ear Question

They can take a very long time to sprout. We had one that didn't look like it was going to do anything after two months inside so it went into the compost. I guess a squirrel pulled it out and it ended up in the middle of a bleeding heart. I saw it there and it had started to sprout. Put it into...

    Ground Cherries

I wasn't 100% on Physalis peruviana. I've seen ground cherries also called cape gooseberry. But I know there is another fruit called cape gooseberry, but I though it had a different latin name. Now I'm even more confused, after looking it up. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physalis_peruviana is...

    Ground Cherries

Looks like ground cherries are Physalis peruviana while tomatillos are Physalis philadelphica. Related, but different species

    Ground Cherries

Thanks @journey11, they sound good. Anything pineapple won't last too long around here.

    Ground Cherries

I was looking at a seed site and saw ground cherry seeds. I've heard of them before but don't know much about them. So looking a bit into them I've decided I want to try to grow ground cherries next year. They seem easy enough to grow, start the seeds inside and then plant in the spring. Anyone...

    Volunteer squash

It's always fun to see what surprises you get. Do you have any idea what they could be? Hopefully they don't shade out your strawberries.

    Volunteer squash

So the buttercup squash I planted this year can't cross with the others I have? I have two types of zucchini, lemon squash, sugar pumpkins and spaghetti squash. I don't save the seeds from my pumpkins or zucchini because I have heard they can cross, though I'm sure that some of the volunteers...

    Corn Thread for 2014

I didn't get a good look. I didn't want to get anywhere near the car. But I don't think she was very old, in her 50's maybe late 40's. I do agree, she should not have been driving.

    Corn Thread for 2014

Thanks everyone, I will pull the broken ones out. It was the wind and rain that knocked the corn down. Somehow the lady missed all my gardens. Mistook the yards for a road but drove around the gardens. It looks like she went down to the cul-de-sac and into a driveway then jumped some brick/rocks...

    Corn Thread for 2014

We had a crazy storm come through here over the weekend. Lots of rain and heavy winds. It knocked all my corn down, some flat. And not all the same way, the corn laid in every direction. I had to use string and got most of it up, some are still a little tilted but the corn still looks good and...

    Volunteer squash

Thanks @Ridgerunner. I should add too that right now they are green, like unripe pumpkins and maybe 6-8 inches long for the biggest ones. The plant is loaded with flowers too.

    Volunteer squash

Every year I get a few volunteer squash plants in my compost pile. I normally let a couple grow to see what I get. I've gotten cute little mini pumpkins which I assume came from the ones I bought for my rats and guinea pigs. Two tone egg shaped gourd which I have no clue where they came from and...

Best Cherry tomato I ever tasted?

I love black cherry tomatoes. I found it a few years ago, no luck this year. Looked everywhere. Next year I am going to start some from seed, to make sure I get what I want. They are probably my favorite cherry tomato. For regular tomatoes I like mortgage lifter. They produced well and tasted great.

    Sweet Potatoes

I've found not all sweet potatoes will grow. I look for ones that have growth already. Usually small bumps, sometimes the tips of vines started. On ones I haven't seen at least tiny bumps have rotted. I would start at least a month before it's time to plant though, some of them can take some...

choosing new grill - are charcoal ashes good for soil????

I use lump charcoal in my grill and put the ashes in my compost. Hasn't seemed to hurt anything, but it's not really that much ash.

What interesting creatures live in your garden?

That snail is so cool looking. We get all kinds of critters around here. Deer, fox, skunk, raccoon, groundhogs, squirrels, flying squirrels, chipmunks, shrews, voles, deer mice. Birds of all kinds, some that I've seen are blue jays, song sparrows, chipping sparrows, white throated sparrows...

    More help please

The second one may be a grape, we get tons of them popping up all over the place. The third is Virgina creeper. I'm not sure on the first.

    ????

Looks like what my mom has growing on a tree in her yard. It was there when she moved in. I think it's wintercreeper, at least that is the conclusion I came to.

    Quinoa

I've have to check in the morning if they have a blush to them. I think they may though. I had let the lambsquarter grow because my animals love it. I was planning on letting them bloom and then try to tell them apart. I had no idea they looked identical. :barnie
