That is what I am thinking too. Though I have have planted many sunflowers in the same spot for two years with no problems. Our soil here is clay, but I mixed a good amount of compost in the gardens.
I'm sure the attic doesn't freeze, it's my bedroom. The basement here gets really warm. My attic closet is the coolest room in the house, other then the garage, but I think it would freeze out there.
I want to save my dahlia tubers this year. I really like the varieties I got, but I have never tried to save them. I also want to try to save my elephant ears. I have read to let the plant start to die back, then cut it down and dig them up. Get most the dirt off and then let dry for a couple...
I love sunflowers, I have a bunch of different varieties planting all over my yard. Everything from the huge mammoth ones, bright yellow, pale yellow, red, bi and tri-colored and 'fuzzy(or teddy) bears'. Last year I had a problem with deer eating my sunflowers. One the smaller types (ranging...
These things are everywhere in both my flower and veggie gardens. They are on my collard greens, cabbage, cleome flowers and today I saw them on nasturtiums too. My cabbage and collards didn't stand a chance this year between the harlequin bugs and cabbage whites. The harlequin bugs also killed...
Female cats can and will spray, trust me. Even spayed. I also had a female scotty that would lift her leg. It takes some work but you can train dogs to use certain spots. And like thistle said, give the plants a good soak.
I planted sweet potatoes this year. Some of the plants looked like they had died back completely and I forgot all about them. A week or so later they had new growth on them. Now those plants a few feet long and doing great. Don't give up on them, sweet potatoes seem like really hardy plants.
Great thanks. I checked again, looking closely at them. Some are pretty large, others still are smallish. So I am going to pull the large ones now and let the rest grow more.
Last year I had 3 or 4 zucchini plants. Most my zucchini came from came from one plant, one other plant only gave me a few zuccs. Two plants only had male flowers all season, one plant had mostly male flowers with a few females. And the last plant gave me enough zuccs to make up for the other...
This is my first year growing shallots. The bulbs are now almost laying on top of the soil and are pretty large too. But the tops are still nice and green. When should I harvest them? Now? Or should I wait until the tops start to die back? Right now they look to be a good size to use, any reason...
I guess I am lucky. I have lots of pumpkins, cucumbers and zucchini. I have seen squash bugs (and those stupid stink bugs that are everywhere) but they haven't killed any of my plants yet. Overall, for me, they aren't a big problem, but I do kill them on sight.
I have tried beer, didn't get any slugs. I did find a spider in there though, alive and well. :barnie Currently I am using crushed egg shells and DE. Plain egg shells work great too. I put a ring of egg shells around anything the slugs like and it keeps them away completely. I had a problem with...
I have lots of favorite flowers. And it changes year to year. Lets see, the tops on my list (for now) are
Stock - they smell so good
Foxglove - beautiful flowers, and I love how tall they can get. Last year I had one that had to be about five feet tall. Also attractive to hummingbirds
Lupine -...
Yup, bittercress. We have it growing all over, but I leave it, just pull it from my flower gardens. I like it because it is one of the first things to flower, even if they are tiny little things.
I would want something besides maple planted. I got so tired of pulling maple saplings out of my gardens all the time. The last house I lived in, and the house my mom is in now have maple trees out front. It is a never ending battle pulling the trees that start from the seeds, the squirrels and...
