@so lucky, those huge mounds use to cause more damage than the surface tunnels in my gardens. That's why I start trapping the moment I see tunnels appear.
I usually have a pretty high tolerance for things, but several years ago my entire rock garden was transformed into dirt mountains in 2...
Moles are active year round, @curly_kate . I assume they go below our frozen solid ground in Winter and somehow manage to survive to dig again.
This site has some good pest ID and fun mole facts-

Well that makes sense.
Once the grand kids saw them I would probably have to keep restocking, if they go missing, to avoid sad faces. I guess they are cheap enough, unless it attracts more 'coons. Will have to think about that for next year. It would be neat to have some fish in there.
Yes, @so lucky , your memory is correct. They nest in colonies that are amazing to see.
@catjac1975 , a search shows several in MA... Arcadia, Wrentham, etc.
Just search 'blue heron rookeries MA'. And OH!.. I think this is by you .. Marion
The rookery near me has about 250 nests. Just amazing...
If it's been very dry they may have gone deeper to find food. Hopefully food was scarce or they got a belly ache and moved on. :fl
I've trapped 4 this year, no more sign of them for about a month. But you should see the mounds in the yard across the road.
Great capture @catjac1975 ! Beautiful setting too!
Do you know if there's a rookery near you?
The Blue Heron is quite the town celebrity here. It's our city logo, there's the Blue Heron Elementary School, Blue Heron Days are this weekend... parade and all.
There is a large rookery about 2...
The popular Chinese Lantern around here that I am referring to is in a totally different family, Solanaceae . Perennial ornamental used for really cool dried flowers. They are not invasive for some people, but if they are happy with their location, watch out. They were extremely delighted in my...
Not to be confused with Chinese Lantern, the ground cherry. This is what I usually associate with that nickname. I grew them once. Even after being warned. I should have listened.
I think flowering maple usually refers to the hybrids.
@valley ranch - maybe you will be able to closer ID the...
I went to the mailbox yesterday and a gal that was walking her dog commented how pretty those orange lilies are by my mailbox. Thought about you, @Nyboy .
Another plus, they are not affected by dog pee. :D
Good to know.
I'm pulling the Lily of the valley now because it's easier to do when it's starting to get ugly. But was thinking of planting some there next Spring.
Now I have to get brave enough to stop avoiding the Spring bulb racks. Self control, set limits, I wish I could just find them in...
Beautiful dog @rebbetzin , and he's keeping you in shape too. :)
Our lab had a similar Winter activity, with one of those returnable milk jugs. He would pick it up by the handle and run around the half wall between my kitchen and living room. Round and round, all the daycare kids would run...
Beautiful shady tub @Carol Dee !
I'm pulling out a bunch of Lily of the valley, looking for something with late season color.
It's been several years since I've grown them, can't remember, do they hold up well into Fall til the frost takes them out?
@Nyboy , I think snakes will eat anything they can stretch their ugly face around! :hide
We had 2 dogs and a cat that would occasionally dig up the tunnels, so I feared using the poison.
Moles tunnel and eat day and night. One or two of them can make it look like there's a whole herd of them...
