One reason why they recommend placing feeders and birdbaths near bushes or trees so birds can escape under cover if they have to. That works sometimes, but I have watched a hawk take a goldfinch right off the thistle feeder on my porch.
Congrats @bobm ! What an honor! I remember photos of your beautiful yard and tips for drought tolerant gardening. Wish I could have made the tour!
I dug around and found the old post, but maybe Bob wants to update us.;)
My yard was in a tour years ago, I will never forgive the skies for that...
Sorry :hide, I thought you had mentioned a beer, I must read better.
Good for him, for learning from a bad situation!
Now if he could just get addicted to gardening.:)
I was shocked it sat there that long, looking at me. I guess I'm more used to birds disappearing the second I think about grabbing the camera.
The bluebird nesting season here is April through August, usually two broods, so they are probably done. I recently read that the families stay...
Thanks! I had not looked it up yet to verify my guess. I was just saying, the only owl I had ever seen was the snowy owl, so that was neat to see! Something has been doing a great job keeping the rabbits down around here.
I remember that well @Smart Red, we were still sitting out on the deck in Dec.
Christmas morning I looked out the window to see a bluebird and a robin, had to think what month it was! We had a few patches of snow but most of the ground was clear. Hopefully it didn't confuse the birds too much...
Indigos are another one I rarely see, just a few times in the many years we've been here. My sister lives about 30 miles north and has a yard full of them most the Summer. What did you have out to attract them?
Blue Jays are so noisy, and they seem to get the raspberries more than any other bird. We have switched to the type of feeder they can't seem to land on easily. It attracts the cardinals, grosbeaks and the smaller birds. I have rarely seen the Jays since we changed feeders.
So, this morning I went out early to try to beat the blasted heat and saw something hanging in a tree by the pond. It looked like a big blob laying on a branch, from the house anyway.
I grabbed my camera to zoom in and see what it was and... !!! Right near the tree with holes /possible...
No, they migrate south, but some bluebirds have been spotted down by the river during mild Winters. There must have been food available. We actually saw one here on Christmas Day, about 5 years ago. That's very rare though, but COOL!
With the almost Texas heat we've been having lately, I have been doing more bird watching. Beats cleaning the house when it's too hot to garden. Anyway, I watch every year for Bluebirds. I have had two houses up for several years, making sure they are clean and ready. 'Vacancy' signs still...
A real bad tomato year usually shoots the season for me too, @journey11 . Saving me from total disappointment; I helped my daughter put in a garden at her house this year. (the daughter that barely knows a daisy from and dahlia ) The tomato and pepper plants I started for her are huge...
Mine are not the greatest this year either @so lucky, so far anyway. I think they need a Super Frappe!
We had our first BLTs about a week ago. Dh picked, so I don't know what kind it was, but it sure was delicious!
I moved my tomatoes to a different area this year, planted them deep, then it...
I need a hat like yours @Smart Red, it looks airy and cool.
I have tried the straw hats too but they just make me too hot. I usually just clip my mop up and put on a sweat band. I'm also kind of a wimp, hot and sunny, you will find me in the shade bed.
Dh doesn't do much in the garden but...
Congrats on your success this year @jackb !
That's what I had concluded about hardneck vs softneck also, and then I stumbled upon this -
http://www.wegrowgarlic.com/7422.html
Their website has not been updated in a few years so I don't know if they are still in business, but they claim to grow...
@Smart Red
I dug divisions from the bush, similar to how you would with lilacs, lifting a shoot with as much root as you can and then chopping off the sucker.
I'm not sure if I have a clear theory as to your flat mop heads but - my bush also has some underdeveloped flower heads. The blooms...
This was a big story on our news last night, where have I been?

Boy how times have changed, when I was a teenager I was usually at work.
I will be celebrating with an hour nap in the hammock! ... as...
