Nice pictures Journey. I saved a bunch of dwarf dahlia tubers from last year's garden. They are just starting to put shoots up now. I love the little dahlias there are so many variations.
Thanks for the advice on how many to get. I want to start small (3-5) and see how I do with them. I imagine the grandchildren will name them, but I am going to try not to! Giving the chickens away is a good way of getting around the problem of cooking a named chicken!
Baymule, I love your chicken house! I am going to show the pictures to my husband, because you guys have really gotten me interested in getting a couple. Lesa thanks for the advice about how to handle them in the garden, I probably wouldn't have thought of that until it was too late! Steve, I...
Thanks Baymule, you have really inspired me. Thanks for the tips about how you manage them in your garden. I like the idea of a fall 'cleanup crew' who also provides 'instant' compost. Do you use them for meat or eggs or both? Thanks also for the dimensions of your coop and run, that was...
I used three parts peat, one part vermiculite and one of pearlite in the starter mix I made this year. Had pretty good results except with the dahlia seeds. I don't know what went wrong with them! Reordered the seeds today :barnie. This is a new recipe for starter mix that I am trying.
Still washing out pots...
Potted up the dahlias that I saved from last summer. Looks like most of them made it! :) I tried an experiment, storing some in peat moss and some in wood shavings (not sawdust). I had more rotted tubers in the shavings than I did in the peat moss. I'll stick to...
Lesa, I would love to hear about your chickens. Do they eat slugs? Can you turn them loose in your garden without them damaging the plants? I am talking to my husband about getting a few. Do you go for meat chickens or egg layers? I live in a residential area where the lots are about 1 acre...
I washed out all my plastic pots (I use them over again every year). That is probably my least favorite chore every year. The water is so cold and I have a lot of pots to wash! I buy plugs from a wholesaler in Florida for my flower baskets and pots and they arrived yesterday, so I will need...
Love your daylilies Catjak. I will look forward to your pictures when they bloom. I dabble a little at growing daylilies (don't know enough to create them) and am looking at some of the ones you have developed, just beautiful. I will look forward to more of your pictures.
I love to cook, so it's hard to find just one or two favorites so I'll just mention the tools that I use most often. I have this crappy old bench scraper that I love. It's such a simple thing, but is a go to tool for me. The other favorite is a set of knives my husband made for me. Any cook...
I am very territorial about my kitchen and garden. I like having something to call 'my own', even though when he is out helping me with the heavy work (shoveling, hauling, etc) I am very appreciative.
We ran a construction company and worked together for years. We had defined...
You can buy a kerosene heater that doesn't require electricity. They have low med hi thermostats on them. We used a couple of them for a while after an ice storm that knocked the power out for a couple of weeks. They are available at hardware stores or at building supply stores. They put out...
Spring is definitely in the air for us. I mixed up some starter soil yesterday and today will start cantaloupe, acorn squash and dahlia seeds. It's nice to be outside without a muffler, hat, coat, etc. (I am not hardy in cold weather :\ ) Hope you are all getting some sunshine.
Buckabucka, you are sure getting it this year. Spring must be on your mind all the time :hit. I sure understand, in 2008 we got record snowfall here in Eastern Washington, but NOTHING like what you're going through. Good luck with your hot pepper seeds.
