I sympathize with everyone who has quack grass. The most effective way I've found to knock it back is to be persistent and keep after it. It wants to take over
I bought a load of 'top soil' from a landscaper that was going out of business. It was horrible, the whole load was full of quack grass. I'm still dealing with the stuff.
What has been the most effective for me is pretty labor intensive. In the Spring, DH gets the shovel and I get a screen...
I am sure you're right about the flower. I call 'bittercress' 'touch me not' because that's what my mother called it. Maybe it's one of those regionalisms that was discussed in an earlier thread?? :idunno
Glad to finally know the correct name for it.
Steve, the Mica Peak I look at is located in Washington. It has a radar station on top. Our neighbor used to work at the station. Long commute, good view. The 'Mica Peak' in Idaho is also known as Signal Point and Shasta Butte. Sounds like it's having an identity crisis
My mother called bittercress 'touch me not' because after it's flowered, it will shoot seeds all over the place if you try to pull it then. The best way to get rid of it is to pull it in the early spring before it flowers. It can't shoot seeds then. It's really a nuisance for me, and I'm...
I know what you mean, Ducks,we hit 57 today, and I was out attacking weeds. But by November, I am tired of the garden and ready to turn my sights to other things, then in January, I am looking at the pictures from the previous years' garden and getting real anxious to be back at it. This year...
My DH loves to garden, which for me, is both a blessing and a curse. (I like to do things my way :barnie) I love the peace of the garden, fussing over my seedlings and arranging the garden beds, planning what to plant; so in that aspect I like to be alone. But, DH is always ready with a...
I dodged rain and hail storms today. I am trying to get an early start on getting rid of the touch-me-not weed (bittercress) that has made a happy home in one of my flower gardens. It's a really rotten weed that sprays seeds all over the place if it is pulled after it blooms. I read that the...
Seedcorn, Buckabucka and Lesa, I will NOT complain at all about the rain we had today! You are sure going through it this year. :hu
Hopefully, when Spring does come, it will be so welcome for you.
We are expecting 56 degrees today!! As soon as the repairman finishes with my oven, I think I'll go out and enjoy some spring. My lilacs are putting on leaves, we're gettin' there! Sympathy for all those who are still dealing with that cold frozen stuff
Thanks for the article Seedcorn. I have a neighbor who keeps bees and was very happy to see the honeybees in my garden last year. Carol, sorry about your loss, but am glad you're going to keep trying. Good luck with them this season!
I am not a compost expert Jonrek, but I have always heard that you should not put meat or fat products into a compost pile. You can use vegetable parings, leaves, garden debris, straw, things like that. Hope that helps. There are many others here who can give you more advice. Welcome to TEG! :)
Hi Thistlebloom, My husband grew up in Bonners Ferry (North Idaho). Both sets of grandparents lived in that area, one set in town, the other up the Yak river. He loves it.
Not in the greenhouse, thankfully. I went around to the sprinkler boxes and opened them because they like to hide in there. I got six of the slimy little @#!##'s. Today, I am going to try to clear off some of the mulch and see if I find any of the little critters in there
I think a lot of people would like to garden, but are overwhelmed by all the different approaches to it. When people ask me, I say just start with planting something you like. Don't worry about 'over-thinking' it, you will have successes and failures. Don't be afraid of failure, I don't think...
Bucka, that is some serious snow you've still got. Hope the sun shines soon and you get a chance to dig out!. I will stop feeling sorry for myself because it looks like rain today! You're right Steve, we're getting rain today. Thistle, I hope the rain washes some of your snow away. I...
