We have gophers here too. I trap what I can. We used chicken wire in the bottom of the boxes. The holes are smaller than all the gophers I have caught and I had a roll laying around.
I also have a 40x40 back to Eden style garden
I'm planning on building a few more beds already. Probably two more of these 8 foot beds and one 20 foot with a trellis in front of the rabbit hutches to shade them in the summer.
Got them filled. The top 4 inches is Kellogg garden soil. Seems like pretty good stuff. I suspect the leaves and compost under will break down and settle more. I will probably add another 6 inches or more of the Kellogg stuff later
thanks for all the replies. I'm in north Texas. The beds are 4x8 and 10 inches deep. I put a layer of cardboard, chicken wire to prevent gophers and 2 inches of broke down wood chips. I'll probably throw some rabbit manure on top of that but not sure what the next layer will be. I have a large...
I'm going to build some 10 inch deep raised beds tomorrow. Filling them with bagged dirt from Lowe's would be high dollar. Would it be a bad idea to fill half of the bed with unfinished compost and put soil on top of that? I plan on planting in early march
so, I haven't seen a worm in my garden yet.....and I always have plenty of animal waste from butchering. I have been burying these things in the bare spots of my garden about a foot deep. I'm hopeful that it will eventually bring the worms in. kind of like trench composting, but with nasty...
so my cantaloupe get very large, sit there green for about a month and then get these soft brown spots that eventually rot plumb through. so far 12 melons have went to the chickens and i havent gotten 1. i have had one in my window for a month. it's the size of a basketball and still green...
how would you plant bush beans in back to Eden method? rack back the mulch and plant in the dirt? sow in the wood chips? transplant in the wood chips?
thanks
my sand looks like beach sand when it's dry. under the rabbit cages the soil is dark and rich after 6 months. I hope to get the garden to that point one day
this was my corn plot. seems the only thing that didn't get over fertilized was the corn. I layered 4 inches of grass clippings, some aged rabbit manure, and 4 inches of woodchips/shredded leaves. I hope to fill the entire space with black eyed peas soon for fall. they say it's a good follow...
yeah, I think you are right Steve. I habe big plans for the fall garden. mostly root crops. I will probably just hoe in some compost when I plant the seeds for the root crops and leave it at that.
I've been talking to baymule on another site. she's light years ahead of me for sure.
this season I mainly got leaf growth. huge bushy plants and not too much food. then it got hot and everything kinda slowed up or died except the okra. I made my own fertilizer from rabbit manure with a bucket...
do you guys have any tips for gardening in Sandy soil? amendments, mulching methods, etc?
My plot is pure sand....or silt, can't tell the difference. I tilled in as much organic matter as I could find back in the spring. mostly black mow manure, horse manure and bedding, chicken waste and...
