Lately I have been craving those first Summer tomatoes, even drove about 20 miles to a farm with huge greenhouses growing tomatoes hydroponically. The vines were a year old and about 12' tall! They were $3/lb. and of course I had to have some. They were better than the grocery store tomatoes...
No snow here in the fall and not much in the winter for that matter. And I had not thought about the rain (probably just punch few holes in it for drainage) or extending the season in the fall. How much earlier before our last frost would you plant?
Bee, great idea about the understory, I was just wondering if my plan was going to work out and that I could be running out space.
I'm also thinking of covering the whole thing wit plastic, making a rectangular "hoop house" to give me an earlier start. If leave the ends open it should be much...
Yep, I'm 6'5" and they are even with the top of my head. The tomato trellis is 6 panels 2' apart. I'm worried it should have been more like 18". Guess I'll find out soon enough.
Some garden friends and their teenage son came over today and helped put up my cattle panel trellis because I pulled my old ones out and here is what it looks like:
help me out here, back in the summer I just uploaded pics from my photo library, no problem. I tried to upload a couple from my photo library using my iPad and keep getting messages that the file was to large. The pics are from an iPhone 6+ and I'm using an iPad 2 to post from my photo library...
I should have mentioned that about 1/2 of my fall planted potato onions and shallots came from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. As of today none of the SESE potato onions have sprouted, so I rooted around and found a couple that were still firm. I guess they are waiting on some condition they...
I'm bringing this back up to talk about perennial onions. I ordered potato onions from southern exposure and from Kelly Winterton, check out Kelly's garden. I also put in white multiplier onions and Eygyptian walking onions from eBay, along with some short day onions from Dixondale for...
So, I got to thinking, always dangerous and expensive! I planted about 300 candy onions from Dixondale in March hoping to get some decent size bulbs and also use them as spring onions. The largest bulb I got was about 21/2 inches, but they were tasty. I also planted some potato onion seed on...
Here is mine, from Saturday. Been getting early girls for few weeks, can't ever get heirlooms before the week of the fourth. Harvested all the broccoli and most of the cabbage. Pulled the candy onions around the first of June, not much size so I will switch to a short day next year. Dug out the...
I have not used it yet, but I'm going to. Bugs are already attacking cabbage and broccoli, I bought a small 8 oz bottle from a big box, but it's not the cold pressed 100% in the link above. Most say the cold pressed is more effective, so I am going to order it. Hope to spray cole crops and...
