I Forgot My Candy Bars AGAIN!

I'm a little slow responding this week. I got sick 3 days ago, and I've been running 700 miles a day. At the end of the day, I've been going to bed as soon as I could. I put the "AGAIN" in the title because I have left all kinds of candy bars in my truck all summer. I've ate more melted candy...

    Sevin and Copper Fungicide

The spray I make isn't a toxin unless hot peppers are toxic. The recipes I have seen call for 1 or 2 peppers. That didn't do much, so I use 6 or 7. That apparently makes the plants "hot" enough that most bugs don't want to eat it. The only other ingredient is a small amount of liquid soap. I...

    Sevin and Copper Fungicide

That is my way of thinking also. The last time I used Sevin, it got rid of all the bugs. I've used my homemade pepper spray fairly successfully this year. There were very few bugs in my beans. It worked well enough that I never resorted to the Sevin.

    New Garden Area Dilemma

I am an extreme workaholic. This week I have driven over 3400 miles and tomorrow I have to start picking 300' of wide row green beans and get them ready for canning. I have other chores to do as well before leaving out at 5 am Sunday morning. Even I wouldn't consider holding a job and working a...

What did YOU do in your garden today :P

That's a cornfield beside me. My sweetcorn is long gone. I know there are lots of cover crops that have a good purpose. I started using soybeans a long time ago because they pull nitrogen out of the air and if you sow them early enough, the make a lot of foliage (organic matter) to till in. I...

    confession time....

I went to an estate auction Saturday morning. I got a lot of small things. The main buys were 128 canning jars for $51 and a clothes dryer for my niece for $30. The local auctioneers around here don't do that. One got caught doing it several years ago and nobody would hire him after that.

What did YOU do in your garden today :P

I spent all day Friday in the garden. I picked and shucked the rest of my Rainbow corn, chopped and tilled in the stalks, pulled the bean plants to be shelled for seed, picked a few tomatoes, tilled up both of those areas as well as all around my pepper plants, then I sowed Ground Hog Radish in...

    confession time....

I buy lots of my tools and machines at auctions and yard sales. Here's a couple (out of many) examples. I got my big grinder for $5 at an auction. It has a 2" shaft and weighs over 200lbs. It came with 3 extra wheels. New wheels cost over $100 each. I got my welder for $25. The comparable...

    Corn Thread for 2014

You might try hot pepper spray. It is supposed to make plants taste bad (spicy hot) to bugs and animals. I make my own, but I've seen it for sale also. I had a pretty bad bug problem on my green beans. One week after spraying, almost no bugs. I didn't have any deer problems and very few bugs in...

    We May Have Met Before

I have only worked here 5 years and National Barn isn't one of our dealers, so unfortunately I didn't bring yours to you.

    We May Have Met Before

I have delivered to a dealer in Trafalgar a few times, but most of my runs, and the people I meet, are a lot farther away. This week I took stock material to a dealer at Rensselaer Falls, NY, 120 miles north of Syracuse, came back empty and took 2 building packages to Stevensville, MD and...

    We May Have Met Before

I have run into people on other forums that I delivered a pole barn to. If you bought a pole barn or garage in the last 3 or 4 years, there is a remote chance I delivered it to you. The company I work for has buildings in every state east of the Rockies.

    Weather where you are.

This entire year has been cooler than normal for us at home. Everyone is saying this winter is going to be bad. I've had to drive through more snow/ice storms in the last 3 years than I care to remember.

    Sawdust As A Soil Builder

I knew big factories used melamine. I didn't think about smaller shops using it. The Amish shops in my area don't build cheap cabinets with melamine in them. Wood chips take a lot longer to break down and rot than sawdust does. Tilling in sawdust works well if you add nitrogen to help it break...
