I'm trying to garden! The chickens plucked the onion sets out of the dirt so I had to replant those. I won't put the cold weather veggies in until I get something to protect them.
Thank you all so much! I didn't do a whole lot yesterday except work. I did go to the nursery today and bought some peppers and tomatoes. Then I had dinner with my brothers and parents.
You all are too kind- thanks for thinking of me :)
I really want to extend the life of my cold season plants and protect them from high temps and insects. I have planted different kinds of lettuces, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, early and late cabbage, and chinese cabbage. Any suggestions on what you use? Last year my cabbages...
I still can't believe that I wasn't able to start ANYTHING this year. Work has been insane, we went on an 11 day vacation, and lots of events for nieces/nephews. But on a brighter note, a small family run farm in my hometown will reopen this year to sell their own started plants. They don't...
Golly, look at that tiny little guy! My chickens would have a hay day with that. The funniest thing is seeing a cherry tomato stuck to the top of a rooster's beak. I don't know if i've ever laughed that hard in my life. He looked like a clown :D
I had a horrid year for squash. The vines grew and grew but I didn't get a single acorn. My cucumbers also did particularly well this year. I had enough pickling sizes to do about 60 quarts of dill, 20 quarts of kosher, and who knows how many pints of sweet chunk. One day I was so fed up with...
A bushel of romas that got cooked down last night is all processed and simmering on the stove with herbs, onions, and green peppers. Soon to be spaghetti sauce! Eating a BLT in the meantime...
Lots and lots of canning! Tomato juice, sauce, chili base, salsas, whole, whole seasoned with chilis, crushed, soups, the list goes on...
With being in sugar sand soil I typically don't get a lot of fruit off of my plants- even with fertilizers.
We use LOTS of blood meal (since we are so nitrogen deficient) and also feed the deer small amounts of deer feed from the feed mill to keep them out. We put the feed on the opposite side of the creek from our garden so they will typically stay on that side. They have only ever eaten my...
Here are a few random photos of the garden this year and some of my produce I've gotten so far.
This is the first time I have gotten any type of lettuce to grow in my garden. I am very happy about it!
This garden has 111 tomato plants and 87 pepper plants. On the far end there are also...
I have been drying mint, lemon balm, chamomile, and lemon verbena like crazy! I made a cold tea out of green tea, lemon balm, lemon mint, lemon verbena, and stevia and it is SO GOOD!
