Reminds me of the old joke about the city lady's and the farmer.
One very hot summer day, three lady''s visiting their friend who lived in the country, wanted to go for a cooling dip in a local farmers pond.
They asked for his permission, but he refused.
Feeling brave, they snuck on to the...
I usually plant it in the early spring, and harvest all summer and as I mention, until a hard frost or a freeze. This summers drought was tough on many of my veggies, so I held off planting the broccoli until mid August. I'm hoping for a mild fall, so I can get a fair share of it.
I certainly...
I now much prefer the budding types of Broccoli.
Sure, the heads are small, but you can continue to harvest it late into the fall, and there's always enough for adding to a salad, or a stir fry. A hard frost seems to be the only thing that halts production.
I think in the future, I won't even...
Nyboy, you'd have loved Vancouver's Wreck Beach.
Lots of controversy about it back in the 70's when it started getting popular, but today it is an internationally acclaimed naturist destination, and the largest clothing-optional beach in N. America. During the summer, it attracts an average of...
I have a very private property, 15' high hedge all around it, other than the driveway entrance. I love it.
Heck, I'd garden in the nude, if it wasn't for the unexpected visitors who just drop in..I suppose that might be a tad em-bare-ass-ing..lol
The Mrs. doesn't mind..
You spot the deer in...
Since discovering them, I only grow Marketmores now. Fantastic eating, high production, easy to care for.
My seeds aren't called Marketmore 76 though..must be a similar hybrid variety of them?
I grew English long cukes in the greenhouse one year. Good eating, but production was poor.
I find the odd huge yellow cuke hiding sometimes, which have badly overgrown. I find the seeds are to big and to tough, in addition to the skin being inedible. You could save the seeds from those ones, but otherwise its chicken feed..
I save my bean seeds every year. I have both pole and bush beans growing in beds next to each other, and the seeds seem to stay true to the parent plant. I certainly have never noticed any crossing, although with my bush beans it may be harder to tell. With pole beans there's no doubt, they are...
I always manage to stab some. I just cut out the wound, and eat those spuds that night. I use my "gloved" hands when I can, to feel for them, but it often takes a fork to get down deep enough to get them all.
My hens may not appreciate this post..but eating weeds is a wonderful means of attacking them..Serve them right..lol
In studying more about the different kinds of weeds that continue to pop up in my veggie garden, (in spite of the drought like conditions this summer), it turns out many of them...
If we ever get rain.. I really look forward to this falls mushroom season. My favorite is the chanterelle's, but I would like to try the chickens if i can find some.
Golden Chantys.
Oyster Mushrooms are another that grow on dead trees, and are very tasty..They can easily be grown at home on a...
Sheesh..I never realized they could be so dangerous..Read this on a wine making web site.
"Cautions
In all species, the stems, leaves, bark and especially the roots are toxic; the latter are known to have caused death to rooting animals such as swine. All immature (green) berries are considered...
I've had luck planting spinach in August, for a late crop. You don't get as large a plant I found, but plenty enough for salads.Arugula can be planted now and harvested all winter, depending on the temps. Little early for garlic still, but leek seedlings might do well, if you don't get sub-zero...
"We have only gotten one meal of beans from the garden. (I have used blood meal repeatedly, and extra fencing, but apparently the bunnies like the taste of blood meal, and run right through the fence.)"
Use bunny bloodmeal next time..lol
Wow..nice big melons!
I guess this was the year to grow them outdoors, with all the heat we've been getting. Usually we can only grow them in a greenhouse.
Do you dump ashes in your compost, and then add it to your garden? That can cause scab on spuds.
I had a good crop of red pontiac's, back about a month ago. Love them when they are harvested as new potato's.
So a neighbor makes elderberry wine every year, and is still kicking.
Does the fermenting of the berries change the chemical property of them. I'm pretty sure he doesn't cook them first..?
Steve mentions collard greens, one of my favorites..it's good to eat all summer long, no bitterness. I have also had pretty good luck with gai lan as well, although the leaves/heads get progressively smaller as the summer wears on. Both are a steaming green, I don't eat them raw, like you can...
