    I think their original purpose is display grid. These pieces snap on, and you can hang retail items. Mine are practically impossible to bend, we tried with one panel (wanted to bend the top in to make an archway) and all we succeeded in doing was ruining the structural integrity of it, barely...

    P.s. You can buy accessories for this type of display grid - hooks that snap in that you can hang stuff on, but i've never needed that type of storage.
