What Did You Cook and Eat From Your Garden Today?

ooh, I love mole! I was weirded out when I was told it had chocolate in it, until I tasted it. @Smart Red , here's the recipe for the soup. We had it hot, but I'm thinking it would be good cold too... Radish Top Soup 6 Tb butter 1 cup chopped onions or leeks 8 cups loosely packed radish...

    Hello from Oregon

Thanks for your concern, @Smart Red. Luckily we are south of the prevailing winds- haven't even got much smoke in the air over here. But like you, my prayers go out to the people that live there and especially to the fire fighters, dealing with fire in this murderous heat.

    When life gives you lemons....

I have both the wild amaranth (pigweed) and wild quinoa (lambs quarters) growing in my garden, as well as purslane. I pull most of it, but leave a few plants for eating. I'd like to plant a domesticated quinoa (Cherry Vanilla it's called) but I'm not sure how I could weed it successfully- I'd...

    Potato Salad

I always add a gob of Dijon style mustard as well as mayo to mine, hard boiled eggs, celery, onion, maybe cucumber (although that can make it watery if it isn't eaten same day), dill... Now that I'm diabetic, I don't make it as often since I haven't the willpower to only eat a little. I just...

What Did You Cook and Eat From Your Garden Today?

My radishes bolted, so I pulled them out and made a cream soup from the tops. It tastes a little like watercress. Even DH liked it, and he's a picky eater!

    Your favorite way to eat......

Steam them until just barely tender. Meanwhile, melt a gob of butter in a skillet and toast slivered almonds until they are golden and the butter is fragrant with almond. Pour over the green beans and listen to it sizzle, then chow down!

    bread 'fail'

Conga Rats on becoming a Bread Baker! DH has been baking all our bread for about 4 years now, using the sourdough starter he made by mixing some flour and water and letting our local yeasts have at it. He uses the long-rising no-knead method and it makes the most delicious bread with a nice...

    Summer Spaghetti

This is a recipe we wait all year for. It doesn't work with anything less than fully vine-ripened tomatoes with tons of juice. SUMMER SPAGHETTI 2 pounds very ripe tomatoes 1 small onion, minced 1 clove garlic, minced (or more to taste) 2 tablespoons finely minced parsley 2 tablespoons finely...

    What's wrong with my tomatoes?

@canesisters , I do have a couple of small green tomatoes on them... It's been too hot for fruit set for the last week or so, so it's hard to say what will happen now. @journey11 , I'll post the recipe in the Harvest thread.

    What's wrong with my tomatoes?

Thanks everyone. @digitS' the totes were not moved once I planted the tomatoes so I don't think that's what happened. At this point, I believe the tomatoes somehow got just a little drift of herbicide from when they sprayed the road. I'm very lucky that it ONLY touched the tomatoes and not all...

    Thyme

Not sure how much root space thyme needs, but only a couple inches says to me that you'll have to be assiduous in watering and feeding

What do you do with your fresh herbs?

use the tea as a final rinse. It's very subtle- happening very gradually. I happen to like my silver hair so I don't use it myself

    Cukes are ready!!

thanks @jackb! Now I know the difference!

    Cukes are ready!!

The main difference I've seen is the size- pickling cucumber seem to be shorter, perhaps so they'll fit in a jar more easily?

Thanks everyone for the welcome! I think I'm gonna like it here :)

    What's wrong with my tomatoes?

All 7 of my tomato plants are affected, but not the borage I planted in the middle of them to attract bees. DH did remember someone spraying the sides of the road, which I missed. But only the tomatoes are affected, not the jerusalem artichokes, nettles, lemon tree or potatoes- all of which are...

    What's Your Favorite Outdoor Smell?

I'm allergic to horses, so y'all will have to sniff them instead of me, lol

What interesting creatures live in your garden?

Thanks @Carol Dee and @sumi, we feel like we live in the Garden of Eden sometimes. The only down side is that all those animals want to nibble on our plants. Even that I don't mind as long as they leave some for us too.

What interesting creatures live in your garden?

@Smart Red, Boy howdy! it's been hot! 104 today on our front porch... I can barely keep ahead of the watering, and I have to replenish the water for the ducks several times a day. They've decided it's to hot to even hunt flies... they just sit in the shade and pant.

    What's wrong with my tomatoes?

I did see Vector Control come down our street a while ago, but I don't know of any other spraying being done. The compost I used was 4 year old horse manure from some friends of mine- never had any trouble with their manure before. The only other outside sources was that I had to buy some...
