    Squash vine borer help needed

This will be sacrilegious to some but I've had serious issues with both vine and stalk borers so bad that I lost most of my tomatoes to them in past years. What I do to combat it is a little unorthodox. I spray the vines of squash and the bottom 6 inches of tomato stalks with neem oil and then...

    Tomatoes over flowing cages

I've devised a trellis system in between the cages that should hold the extra growth. Only time will tell. In the last few days I've gotten a lot of fruit set so it's going to get heavy...next year...bigger cages

    Heat It Is

It truly is sad to think remnants are all that's left. I had no idea the soil on this property was so good when I bought it. The first time I took a shovel to it I remember thinking the next scoop would hit clay. But scoop after scoop was just rich black soil until at 24 inches I hit a clean...

    Green Tomatoes...

Nighttime temps are critical for ripening...too cold or too hot = green tomatoes. But once night temps fall in the goldilocks zone...bam...ripe tomatoes. If you can't wait any longer pick a mature tomato and put it in a paper bag with an Apple. The ethylene gas from the Apple will ripen the tomato.

    Heat It Is

Weather has been both a blessing and a challenge here. Way too much rain for awhile but luckily I have incredible soil that drains well. The added moisture has generated huge plants but I've had to be extra diligent in controlling fungal problems, bean rust, powdery mildew and septoria. It's...

What did YOU do in your garden today :P

Picked Roma green beans and kohlarobi. Marveled at my 4ft tall zucchini plants...and wandered impatiently through the tomatoes...ate the lone ripe black cherry

    Kale(s)

What am I doing wrong? Growing kale for the first time...it is so bitter we couldn't eat it

    Let's Talk About Heirloom Tomatoes

Yellow pear can overwhelm you late in the season. We like to halve them and use in pasta dishes. My indigo rose is barely over a foot tall and already loaded

    Volunteer squash

I get this every year as I grow one large area of squash and pumpkins and invariably the snow hits before I get it all in. Sometimes the results are edible and sometimes not so much. This year I ended up with 2 plants that have smaller leaves like a winter squash but are setting round fruit like...

    Tomatoes over flowing cages

Hi guys Due to a wet warm spring many of my tomatoes are exploding out of their cages. In your experience is it better to add stakes and or prune or let them hang down the sides? This is a much better problem than last year's septoria outbreak. So far I've only almost lost one plant to a stalk...

Growing grass in a starving world

All of this assumes the situation will remain the same. Unless I miss my guess, skyrocketing food prices will change some attitudes soon. At the very least I expect a major increase in home gardening next year

    Distressing Tomato Problem

I had a similar problem last year. Ended up being juglone poisoning from a nearby black walnut tree

What did YOU do in your garden today :P

Picked Logan black raspberries, weeded and hilled potatoes, harvested the last of the pea pods, battled rust in the beans and then ate black raspberry muffins :)

Growing grass in a starving world

A virus is currently devastating our pork supply and demand for chicken is driving prices to historic levels. There was a news report out today about the subject

Growing grass in a starving world

Food is food. I'd love to add poultry to my efforts but it's not allowed in my town...maybe when things get bad we can barter :) I'm trying yard long beans for the 3rd year. The first year they did great...last year...not so much. They are my favorite bean imposter

    Let's Talk About Heirloom Tomatoes

I likely do. I tend to search out rare varieties for my garden. But being in northern indiana it will be a bit yet before I have any to post :(

Growing grass in a starving world

All of the reasoning for thinking these ideas won't take off assume that things aren't changing. The droughts won't end soon...but soon those food stamps won't buy much. I've seen projections of food prices doubling and tripling. Not to mention the unprecedented spikes in meat prices that are...

    Victory Gardening Revival

I'm delighted to hear that! So often the solutions to problems are right in front of us and we over look them. Unless I miss my guess this type of solution will be needed.

    Victory Gardening Revival

I put in an additional plot this year for the local food pantry. Luckily ours has refrigerated storage and accepts fresh produce. The director told me that they would be happy to provide labor to grow food but can't afford land...sooo...I'm working to get that labor connected to those churches...

Growing grass in a starving world

I'm looking forward here. The very real situation is that America's food supply is currently struggling. Projected food prices don't look good and I truly believe that in the near future we will be looking for answers I think that a victory garden renaissance is needed and possible
