We have six beautiful grandkids, three girls and three boys. I know for a fact they can't wait to get to MamMaw's and PawPaw's when they come to visit. They all live in the surburbs. One lives up just to the north of Toronto, Ontario. Two live in the DC area and our closest three live in...
The two JB traps I set up seem to have worked this year. Most of them seemed to have moved on out or have been trapped. Now if I can find a solution to the squash bugs that are sucking the life out of my crooknecks...
I make ours from 2"x6"x8' treated lumber I get from Lowes. It's my understanding the newer formulation of lumber treatment does not contain arsenic which is what was the concern with the previous types. It still may have something in it but they have eliminated the use of CCAs in the pressure...
Your's and mine both and that's why I went with boxes all around my garden. This old yellow Bull Tallow clay we have here in the Central Piedmont of NC is nothing more than modeling clay. You can't grow anything in it. I've tried for years and gave up and went to my boxes and I'm glad I did...
In past years its been the #$%^#@ squash bugs, but this year it was the *&^%$# Japanese Beetles. Both are destructive. I think I'd rather put up with the JBs and try to control them with traps and organic soapicides. At least they don't attack my squash plants.
MauldinTiger, I've been promising myself that one day I'm going to buy me some cattle panels and make trellises out of them for my cukes, beans, peas, etc.
We planted the squash, corn and beans using the 'Three Sisters' method like the native Americans taught the settlers when they first came over the pond. Now they've (the white man) gone off and planted 5,000 acre fields of corn without any though as to what they were originally taught.
Very nice, MauldinTiger. I've got four butternut plants and four golden hubbard sqash plants tool. All seem to be putting on fruit. We love winter squash.
They're a generic bush bean I got from the local hardware store. I don't think there's a pic of them but there is also a tall trellis of the large speckled butter beans (also known as large limas outside the South). They are just starting to make pods. I was worried as I'd posted earlier that...
Here's a few pics of my 2014 garden. I hate to brag but...what am I saying? I love to brag about my garden. Anyway, it's the best garden I've ever had.
Mostly we tied up the tomatoes this morning and got in the bush beans. This is the third harvest in just over a week and we got at least another ten pounds which makes the total take from a 4'x8'x12" box so far to be about thirty pounds, give or take a pound or two. And they've been great...
Now this is a cool idea. I have ten 2'x2' boxes that I've planted my tomatoes in for the past few years. I have four metal fence posts where I run three strands of plastic coated clothes line from post to post separated by about a foot vertically between each line. I've been fastening the...
You can be sure I won't be doing that again. Yuk! But on a lighter note, Teresa put up 6 quart jars of the bush beans this morning. I think that is so cool. She wants to try a recipe she found in one of her books to make pickles of some of the next picking we get. It looks like they will...
Just an update, the sweet potato slips I salvaged have completely taken over the 4'x8'x12" box I put them in. Every single slip or chunk of sweet potato I planted came up and is thriving. Can't wait for the fall to see what we get. Someone at Teresa's work asked her for some of the remaining...
Guilty. Not fresh, but it was well rotted, composted manure. And last week when I posted this plea for help I couldn't find bean one anywhere. But just tonight I picked two large metal bowls full of bush beans. Probably nearly 10 pounds. Unbelievable. Teresa said she'd put them up in quart...
BayMule, Nice!!! I wish I'd used the 1/4-inch welded wire when I built my run. I'm thinking it would keep the black snakes and mice out. But it was just too expensive and I couldn't find anything other than 3-foot wide rolls so I went with the 2"x4" welded wire instead.
Wow, great responses, Folks! It's been warm, humid and breezy here in central NC. The nights have been in the mid to high 60s and days have been anywhere between 83 to 95 for the past few weeks. My soil pH is right at 7. I haven't had to water very much because we've been getting summer...
I need a bean expert. I planted a 4'x8'x1' box with purple speckled butter beans (giant limas for our friends up 'Nawf'). I treillested them and trained them to it. The foliage is absolutely beautiful and everything seems to be healthy. Lots of little flowers and my bees are working them...
Carol, this looks really, really nice. I have to run my mower through the garden weekly and weed-eat it afterwards or I'd never be able to get in. I've been using my Red Dragon flamethrower around the outside of my boxes to keep down the weeds and grass and it works pretty well. I don't want...
