Our garden got started so late this year that it seems we have been waiting forever to harvest! This week we are finally getting a few summer squash and I see tons of little green tomatoes set, so hopefully we will get some "red" very soon!
Made an interesting observation this morning when I...
Baymule, you are just hilarious, but the dance is more like flailing around trying to get the nasty things out or your clothes, hair, etc. My husband even found one in his skivvies the other day!
Thistlebloom, I checked out that bait and it looks like it's definitely worth a try. I will be...
This year is proving to be a huge bug year. We started with billions and billions of leafhoppers - they are all over everything, even inside the house. Now we have a grasshopper infestation as well. I went to the local nursery and they said that we are in the middle of a 3-year cycle and that...
Well, scratch this site. I certainly don't want to rely on incorrect information. This is why I, and I'm sure others, get so frustrated and confused with this topic. I just need to know how to keep my plants and soil healthy. :barnie
Seedcorn, you obviously have much more knowledge on this...
Ariel, we have much the same climate as you here in central California - very hot and dry. I did quite a bit of research last year to find heat-tolerant tomatoes. Here are the ones we thought seemed the best: Thessaloniki, Arkansas Traveler, Beefsteak (most of them), Delicious, Super Sioux...
I've been poking around trying to get a better handle on how best to provide nutrients for my plants and came across this site. It seems like a great reference, so I thought I would share it. www.natureswayresources.com/resource/infosheets/organicfertilizers.html :)
Our soil is extremely hard/compact. It's like trying to dig in granite. I'm thinking of planting the slips in some kid of raised bed, but I just want to make sure it's deep enough because there's no way the tubers can grow in our "soil". So do you think if I gave them a foot or so of soil...
I just ordered 12 sweet potato slips. Now I just have to figure out where to grow them. About how deep do the tubers grow? Guess I should mentiont that these are Beauregard slips.
Beautiful garden, Chris! I'm so envious of your soil. It looks like you can actually get a shovel into it. We can't even get a pick through ours - darned granite!
Quite right, Marshall! Zucchini bread is amazing! There are some wonderful recipes for it on allrecipes.com. You can even store grated zucchini in the freezer to make zucchini bread during the winter months.
