Nice blog, April!
Along with Yukons, we are trying Red Norland this year. We planted a few last year and loved the taste of them. Next year wil plan to branch out and try something new but wanted to stick to something "normal" for this year since we are very new at potatoes.
I was wondering about the tomatoes because cages seem to better fit the needs of the plants. Maybe trellising both sides (maybe 3 feeet apart?) would be better, though maybe a little harder to harvest. Good idea on the guy wires for the end posts, too. I can do that easily enough.
The...
I think I'm going to use t-posts with field fencing strung between them for trellising my cucumbers. This would make the trellises about 5 feet tall. Do you think this will be tall enough? I've never grown cucumbers before, so I'm not quite sure what to expect. I've looked at lots of pics...
Sounds delish, Trunkman! I harvested quite a bit of lettuce last night so we could have a salad tonight. Hope it tastes as good as yours sounds! This is the first time I have grown lettuce, so I'm really excited.
Beautiful, Kassaundra! Beautiful iris, beautiful pics!!!! I think I need to go have a talk with my iris. They haven't started blooming yet and I'm getting very impatient!!!:barnie
We are very fortunate (and spoiled) to have lots of little Hmong farms around our area. They grow the most amazing strawberries (and other goodies)! There are roadside stands all over the place here, so I haven't even tried to grow any of my own yet. Obviously, it is more expensive to buy...
You know, now that I think about it, if I'm gardening in the morning I tend to prefer the peace and quiet of our "out in the sticks" property, but if it's later in the day I tend to crank the tunes. Hmmm.
Greenthumb, I'm with you! While I do like Classic Rock, Country is king at my house! Love to crank the tunes while cleaning, driving, or working outside.
Ray - Where do you get mushroom manure from?
Teka - I have read conflicting information regarding how deep to plant asparagus. Some sites say that there is no advantage to planting deep and that the plants actually produce better if you don't (especially for the Jersey hybrids, which is what...
Detlor, Lesa, Southern, and thistlebloom, thank you so much for the well-wishes! I will pass them on to Hubby.
Steve - I'm afraid patience is not one of my virtues when it comes to my poor husband. I've been trying really hard, but it's overwhelming sometimes. We are both encouraged that...
Well, it's settled then! I will go ahead and put more soil on them. A bit later in the season, we plan to mulch heavily to conserve water and hopefully help with weeds. Thanks for the input!
Hubby and I planted 40 asparagus plants a while back. We followed the directions that came with them and only covered them with a couple of inches of dirt. We were supposed to go back and add more dirt about 2 weeks later, but hubby ended up in the hospital and we didn't get it done. I went...
Haven't been on here much for the past few weeks. DH went to the Dr for pain and ended up having an emergency operation to remove a section of his bowel and his appendix. We are new to the "major operation" thing and I have to say it hasn't been all that much fun. Poor guy is getting really...
Well, Joan, maybe you will have luck with your Arkansas Traveler. I started some from seed to try last year and they were great in our unrelenting summer heat. So sorry you have such a mess on your hands. Maybe your eventual harvest will make up for the frustration!
